i am installing computers in a network. i am tasked with setting up a KMS service to get let the new pc's, which are installed through an image. i have used the script and a key (server 2008 and a win7 one) to register it and activated it through the /ato command. i do not find any information on how a client pc would react when i add them to the network. do i need to enter the kms key to that client pc also. in the product key section or should it acquire some code from the kms service so i do no longer need to enter any product key each time i install a pc and add it to the network? some info seems to indicate i need to use the kms key as a product key on…

I will be installing several Windows 2008 servers and know how to install Active Directory. My question is because these servers will be in the environment of a state department of corrections and a few users will be inmates who need to be restricted as to what they can access as compared to staff users, I am curious what you might suggest: Should I setup multiple forests? A separate or multiple OUs or just a simply inmate user group and define in that group what inmate accounts can access and NOT include inmate accounts in any domain groups? Thanks,

I built a new Dell server running 64 bit Windows 2008 R2 server OS on it and I am having problems with my XP workstations. The work stations do not always map the drive connecting to the 2008 shared folder, when it does map the drive the users can access the data but at intermittent times the server drive will disappear on them and not be accessible. When this has happened they are unable to do a run to the server by name or IP, if I reboot the server access is restored but this happens to often to be rebooting the server all the time. Windows7 PCs do not have the same problem and always have access to the shared folders on this server so it is just the XP workstations. O…

Hi guys, Some advice please. I have bought a copy of Windows server 2008 from Phoenix Software for our school and i had to down load it as well as the licences etc. I have burnt the files to disk but the server with a new hard drive wont let me boot from CD/DVD. I had downloaded the free trial and that lets me boot from disk. Am i doing something wrong? My other question is now i have the correct product code for Server 2008 can i put that in on the trial version to make it a full working OS? Thanks for looking at my problem guys. Scott

MY first problem is: I've installed SQL server 2008 and ran an ASP.net Application (I have wrote the application) on IIS 6. For debugging the program also I have installed Visual studio 2010. While running the application on visual studio I have no problem to access my database on my SQL server but on the IIS my website can not access the data base. I have checked my Connection string and every thing which link my site to the data base server. Nothing is wrong with them. I thing the problem is with the firewall but I can't fix it !! and my second problem…

Hi I have a issue with Windows 2008 R2 server. We installed it, but now the thing is, I can remote desktop into the system with Administrator and all is fine. I created a user on the system, but when I log in with this user, the server dissapears, and I can no longer ping it. What I have to do then is go to the machine, ctrl + alt + del, log in with Administrator, and then connect again to the internet. Is there a way I can keep this from happening? I am not even sure what is causing it to disconnect from the network. Any help would be greately appreciated. Thanks Kobie Wolke

Hi! I have one computer, that i do not use and i would like to use it as a windows server for domain and VPN access. I have one desktop computer and one laptop computer and i have a couple of questions. 1. Can i have only one domain user for both computers (logged in at the same time), or do i have to create a seperate domain user for each computer? 2. At the moment i am testing the configuration. I can succesfully ping domain.net, server.domain.net, or computer1.domain.net, but I can not ping computer2.domain.net (on computer 2 it is reverse.. i can succesfuly ping domain, server and computer2, but not computer1). Why is that? 3. The computer i plan to use for s…

Hi everybody, I'm new to the forum and new to Windows Server 2008 as well. A friend of mine called me to help him with a new workstation for his office. I've built it and hooked it up to his workgroup network. He has 6 more workstations running Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro. One Server 2008 with one role installed: File Services. Upon connecting his new workstation I've tried connecting to the shares on the server but got the "\\SERVER is not available. You do not have permission...." message. The new workstation can connect to all other workstations and read/write to their shares. Had my laptop with me so I joined the workgroup and tried connecting to the server's…

I setup Windows 2008 R2 Very Generically, with a "Forest" and a couple of users, and computers in the active directory. The workstation's usernames and computernemae are identical to the ones setup in "Active Directory". I have had a Windows 2000 Pro Server running for years, but when I try to get the users to connect to the Domain in Win 2008 R2, I get a message: "Your computer could not be joined to the Domain because the following error has occured." The Network path was not found. XP has faired no better......I am stumped. Anyone can get me pointed in the RIGHT direction? Thanks!

Hello Everyone! I have a Windows Server 2008 set up as a DNS Server among other things, and I need to alter a DNS setting for a domain name so that all LAN computers get a different IP address than what it listed with other DNS providers like say Google or OpenDNS. I think I did this right: Open Server Manager Expand DNS Server Expand DNS Expand (SERVERNAME) Expand (networkname) Action > New Host (A or AAAA) Name: sub.domain.com IP Address: IP.Address.For.ServerLocally Add Host That creates a com, domain subdirectory structure with a record for "sub" with the server's internal IP. However, the workstations still return with the external IP for the serve…
