Hi everyone, I'm sure this is a dumb question. On our server, I created a self signed certificate w/ Server 2008 to be loaded on remote computers. Server 2008 created an installcertificate run file and the certificate file which I can save to a disk and use on 32-bit home machines for remote access to computers on the server. However, I just bought a laptop w/ a 64-bit os and when I save the files onto the laptop and try to launch the installcertificate file, it tells me it can't because it was basically made for a 32-bit machine. Do I need to find a way to launch the .exe from a 64-bit machine? or do I need to create another certificate install file that can be ru…

Most of things I can find out on my own but one thing bugs me like he.. I have a bunch of groups in domain and would like to find out which one are actually in use. I uninstalled Windows 2008 SP2 to get around an issue with an ERP database. Turns out it wasn't SP2, it was something else. Now I get an error code 8000FFFF when trying to re-apply SP2. I have tried every fix I can find related to the error code. Is there a for sure fix here? I have an Acronis image of my server before I did the updates. Is restoring the Windows directory all I need to do to get the server back to a pre SP2 state? Or do I need to restore additional folders? Do I need to restore the entire volume? Need help badly! Mike

So i set up a VM DNS and a VM RDS server. I went through all the setup as it seem to work ok. Even read an artical by Microsoft to make my user on my RDS server. Mind that i am a noobe to RDS and the RDS server is not currently on the domain as i get some error about the account after reboot and have to reinstall the OS. I am still looking for a fix on Microsoft's site on this. What i am having trouble with is after i made a username (Russell) in the Web-access section of Computer Management and i go to a client and type in (RDSserverIP)/rdweb i pull up the Windows Server 2008 R2 login page and use the account made (Russell) and achieve a successful login. However no apps…

Hi all, In Windows 2003, we used the 'ntrights.exe' tool (part of the MS 2003 Resource Toolkit). With Windows 2008, there is no Resource Toolkit anymore, and no more ntrights.exe. Is there an equivalent way to do this in Windows 2008 R2? We used to do: ntrights.exe -u %USER% +r SeServiceLogonRight Any hints or suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Guys, I have installed SBS2008 on some basic workstation hardware to save on costs (reliability is not important). Driver support seems OK except for video. Does anyone know of a server 2008 driver that might support ATI HD3200 onboard video. The motherboard is an ASUS M4A78-VM. Please let me know if this is a pipedream and or if properly functioning video drivers are even important for a basic file server / exchange set up. Thanks in advance Matt

I just recently moved over our file server data from a 2003 box to 2008. Everyone can connect to it just fine except for our apple machines. The machines connect using server finder (connect to server) that's builtin. It's able to connect to all of our servers except the new file server which sits on Server 2008. The only way it's able to connect to the new server is by using Command K and entering smb:/IPADDRESS. At first I thought it was a DNS issue but it's able to ping the server by host name just fine. Any ideas???

I just upgraded (or; re-installed) my olde goode 2003 server to 2008 R2, and everything seems to be quite OK now. But, for some reason I just cannot get any connection to my server outside from my D-Link firewall. I've been using some services like SVN, FTP, Tversity and Remote Desktop thru my firewall with my 2003 server, and everything worked just fine. After the 2008 R2 installation everything is working OK inside my own network, but I cannot get any connections from internet to my new server. List of things I already did: - all ports are forwarded from D-Link just like before, and I checked that the port numbers are OK - checked that all the services are allowed o…

Hi all! My name is Dana, and I am starting to learn Windows Server 2008. I am going through the book configuring Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Training kit my Microsoft press. I have the OS installed on Virtual Box, and I can't log in as other users. I get the "You cannot log on because the logon method you are using is not allowed on this computer" Ok, so I do some searching on the internet, and I find Group Policy Editor- User Rights Assignment- Allow log on locally needs to be changed, however the box to make any changes is grayed out so I can't add local domain users, or users for that matter. How can I fix this? And is this normal for WinServer to have thi…

Hi everyone, first of all - Im German - so sorry for my bad english^^ Yesterday i installed my new Windows Server 2008 Standard (not R2) My CPU is 2 x 2,8GhZ and my RAM is 4GB The Architecture is x64 The Problem is: I installed the Storage Server role and Exchange Server 2010 and now the server is going from super fast to super slow. The funny thing is, that deinstalling the role is still making the system slower. I have never had this before. The System needs about 50min to boot and (please sit down first) 320min to shutdown!!! I think, that this isnt normal... Does anyone ever had the same problem? I dont want to reinstall the server, because…

I have a new W2008 server (named mlcserver) and a single XP Pro workstation. They both connect to a modem router and are in the same workgroup (mlcwrkgrp). From the workstation I can 1) ping the server 2) remote onto the server 3) see the server in My Network Places | Entire Network | Microsoft Windows Network | mlcwrkgrp | mlcserver However, when I click on the mlcserver node I get the error message : "\\mlcserver is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." I am using the same account to do all three t…

Hopefully someone can help. I am having some issues with a client I have taken over. The issue is that many (but not all which is strange) users are having IE fail on most sites into compatibility mode. That would be fine if the compatibility mode wasn't broken. The terminal server administrators are not affected by this issue, but adding one of the users as a temporary admin does not help either. When checking the system with the system update readiness tool I get the following info. Unavailable repair files: servicing\packages\Package_for_KB972260~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.1.mum servicing\packages\Package_for_KB972260~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.2.mum …

We are a non-profit org and because of limitations on purchasing server 2008 i have ended up with a Standard and an Enterprise copy. My question is: I have one domain controller that has a Standard 32-bit OS. Can I have an Enterprise 32-bit dc added to my only domain (it won't be a RODC)? Will they be compatible? I'm also planning DFS Replication on these dc's. Thank you for your help.

Hello All, I have been struggling to find a way to create a multi-boot DVD that will allow me to select from a list of configurations to do an unattended install of that particular operating system with the tweaks specified in a particular answer file. I've tried Aero Studio 2008, which provided a nice interface but was unsuccessful in getting it to read the answer file to boot. I currently have 6 answer files for different configurations of Windows Server 2008 Standard and Enterprise. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Sean

Hey all, I have a question on initial configuration of a few servers. Basically I have two servers, and 4 roles I need to complete. First Server: Dell R410 Standard with 6TB SATA Raid 5, 6GB Mem, Windows 2008 Server standard R2 64Bit. Second: Dell R715 Standard with 146GB SAS 10Krpm Raid 1, 12GB Mem, Windows 2008 Server sTandard R2 64Bit. 6 Drive bays open. 50 domain users, only about 25 connected at any given time, non-roaming profiles. DC is just used for authentication and Management/Group Policy. Server 1 is currently our AV server, SEP, and backup server, although only about 6 other servers, and less than 1TB of data actually back up to it. Server 2 is …

Hey all, Just wanted to introduce myself, Brian. I've been in IT coming on 20 years this next year. Covering everything, Windows, *nix, and OSX. I'm more of a Solaris and Mac OS X Server expert and maintain dozens, but only a few 2008 servers so far. Lately, I've had to set up quite a few, as one of my small businesses consults is growing rapidly, and finally decided to throw some money into the IT budget. Woo-hoo! So I've got some general questions coming at you guys, your help and recommendations would be extremely appreciated. Thanks, and glad to be on board.

Okay, go ahead and laugh now then read and laugh again. I just wiped XP pro off of a Dell ;) dimension 2400. I upgraded the processor to a pentium 4 and the ram to 2 GB. Added a 250GB HD and a DVD burner. Then I installed windows server 2008 enterprise 32 bit trial edition. Laughter now is acceptable... :) So, I was extremely suprised at how well this is acctually running this OS. My problem herin lies... None of the DELL graphics drivers for this board/chipset support windows server 2008. So I am stuck with the looowww resolution settings. 600-400 blah blah... Any Ideas on how to get a graphics driver installed so i dont have to scroll around on every…
