I am studying a course on Server Virtualization . Microsoft gave me the opportunity to download the Windows 2008 Server R2. As I am a registered student, school gave me the access to the dreamspark website to download it. It works fine. However, I can't go to the Internet. My computer works with Linux distributions. I made a partition and install Windows 2008 Server R2. I installed it properly and it works fine. The only problem is that I can't go to the Internet with Windows 2008 Server R2. I have a cable modem. My ISP offers the Internet via cable modems. Nothing wrong with it. I can go to the Internet it. The modem is Cisco. I lodged a complaint with the I…

Hi all, New to this forum - love the layout! I have a question - I'm setting up my first corporate domain and I'd like to add users to Groups via the OU they are in. I can't quite work out how to do this although I'm fairly sure it can be done. I'm on (obviously) Server 2008 (FFL/DFL 2008). Could anyone offer any quick pointers? Many thanks!

Hi, Running server 2008 R2 64Bit and a VPN. users are mostly working the server using TS over the VPN. Users mostly view and modify files on the server, and there's a need to make sure they don't take out files from the server as much as possible. Therefore Internet connection out was blocked, FTP ports were disabled, and clipboard was disabled using group policy. However, since users are creating VPN, they can simply access the server files from their own machine through file sharing (without using TS). Any ideas how to prevent this? Also, any other ideas how to implement better the need to keep the files on the server without allowing the users to tak…

Greetings, My organization currently has a bidirectional, external trust established with another domain NOT in our forest. Both domains are running a mix of Server 2000 and Server 2003. Later this year, both domains plan on upgrading all of their domain controllers to Server 2008. We understand in order to upgrade the 2000 DC's we have to first upgrade them to 2003 and then to 2008. So my question is, from a 2000>2003 and ultimately 2008 upgrade, will this destroy the external trusts on these domain controllers or will the trust remain after the upgrade? Again, these domains are not in the same forest. Thanks.

I have set up the active directory, pointed the dns of the win xp machine to the win server and set all the user folder rights, however, when the user logs into their profile, the theme changes to classic view, there are no programs in the recently used part under the start menu, the clock isn't displayed and you can't change the wallpaper. When I log off none of the changes to the theme are saved. I am also having the exact same problem with another separate network running win server 2003. with this network, all new profiles created are like this, but the ones I have already set up are fine. What do I need to change to make the profile work? Thanks

I installed the SSL certificate from godaddy on IIS 7.0. I am able to browse https from a client computer (my desktop). If I try to browse https from the windows 2008 server (IIS 7.0 box) I get a page not found error. I can create a local certificate in IIS 7.0 and the site will work with https. The problem is I can not view in https from the server that has the SSL certificate installed. I get a page not found error. no entries in the IIS 7.0 log files or event log. It is like the site does not exists. SSL works from my client computer ok.

Hi Friends, I am facing issue when I am trying of open OSK.EXE (On-Screen Keyboard) through ShellExecute() in both Windows 7 32/64 bit and Windows 2008 R2 environments. OSK is not getting popped up after executing the command. My source code’s statement follows: Statement1: ShellExecute ( pWnd, "open", "C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\osk.exe", NULL, NULL, SW_SHOWNORMAL); Note (FYI): (1) If I execute following statement2 by putting OSK.EXE in C:\, then On – Screen Keyboard is getting popped up. Statement2: ShellExecute ( pWnd, "open", "C:\\osk.exe", NULL, NULL, SW_SHOWNORMAL); (2) Statement1 is successfully executed on XP, W2K Server and Vista with expected behavior. (…

I want to start learning about Windows Server 2008 by downloading it from my Technet subscription. Before I buy a new server to install it on, I want to check what CALs, if any, are provided. Will I be able to connect to the server from two home PCs without having to purchase anything further? It seems to me that there must be CALs provided to enable evaluation of the product otherwise what would be the point of making it available via Technet, but I want to be 100% sure. Thanks in advance.

Hello, Ok, so I have never set up a network before - never even seen any server os before - and yet - I am designing and deploying a network at my house (that will actually do a hell of a lot when its finished) Which means I have to learn all this stuff from scratch! However - after playing around on it for about a week - plus google (dont you just love google haha) I am starting to get an ok grasp on it now. But no doubt I am going to need to help as this progresses - plus I thought it would be helpful to others who are in the same situation as me (i.e. want a network thats controlled by a server or servers but never even seen a server operating system before) a…

Is there an order to installing a second domain controller (Server 2008) in an existing domain (2003 Server)? I see directions about how to do specific steps on the Microsoft website, but I am unsure which steps should be done before other ones. I guess I am looking for an ordered list: 1. Setup Partitions on New 2008 Server 2. Do ADPREP on the existing 2003 Server (/forestprep & /domainprep /gpprep) 3. Setup DHCP Role in New 2008 Server 4. Join the existing domain with 2008 Server 5. Add CALs if appropriate 6. etc As an example, I wanted to add CALs before joining the domain, but I cannot find anywhere to add them when I am just in a workgroup. I am sure it …

I always feel as though these things are like an AA meeting :) So with that ... Hi, I'm Andy, and I'm a Windows user. (I do try to quit, but it never quite works out.) I've been in IT for longer than I can remember, but I'm finally starting to take more than a passing interest in the Windows Server side of things, specifically 2008 R2, which I'm using the rather nice 180-day trial of right now. I've got some experience of Windows Server 2003 Standard, but only really in a workgroup environment. I've managed to get 2008 R2 configured in a test domain environment with little to no trouble, but I know I'm going to be running into problems, and this site seems like a gr…
