Hello everyone, I am taking over a windows 2008 server for a company that previously hired nerd herds and geek squads to do computer work for them. Currently the computers are all on a workgroup and not joined to the domain, and I would like to fix that. However there is a lot of junk in active directory users and computers, and I need to find out what I can safely delete without messing anything up. Does anyone know if there are users / groups that are required for certain things to work properly? Below is an exported list of things I am not sure about. If anyone can help me figure this out or at least direct me where to find out what is required by the server that woul…

Hi, I have the following setup: modem----->router----->Server------>local lan switch switch The server acts as a gateway between the internet and the local lan. My question is; I have another computer that i want to move from the switch.....out onto the router directly on an extra port, i also want the computer to still be able to communicate with the inner lan machines. Is this possible? thanks

We have just deployed a terminal services on our new Server 2008 server. We are using thin clients with window embedded ce 6 on then and using RDP to log into the server. I have one user whose profiles will not save. Other users don't have this problem. I have checked the users settings in active directory on or main server and they look the same as the other users. Any idea what could be causing this?

Hello, After I create a user account and set the "User must change password at next logon" option, the user encounters a message indicating they do not have enough privileges to change the password! What am I doing wrong? This only happens on occasion - no rhyme or reason that I can see. Thanks, Jon

My company just got a 2008 Server Standard Edition. I have it setup as a member server on our domain running Exchange 2007. My problem is that the Server does not stay "discoverable" on the network. I can ping it and I can reach it by it's IP or NetBIOS name. It is registered in AD, and all of the folder shares I created are accessible. The only problem is it does not show up on the network list when I try to view the computers on it from any of our other DCs or workstations. The problem with this is that I cannot add this new server to our Backup Exec 12 selection list because Backup Exec doesn't see it. On the new Server, I have Network Discovery on, file sharing on …

Hi i am trying to install some roles and features silently (with the ServerManagerCmd.exe tool) at the first i thought that if i will seperate the installation of the roles from the installation of the features there wont be a problem. but with the time i congfigured that some of the role and some of the feature required restart during the installation. this requirement make the installation fail from the begining and no roles or feature is installing in the installation command. so what i need is a list (or link to documentation about it) of all the roles and the features which required restart during the installation. (so i can seperate all their installat…

Hi, I want to give another user (bkupuser1) the SeSecurityPrivilege like Administrator has. I can see the Administrator has this right by doing Run As Admin on a CMD box, the typing whoami /all I tried to do it with a program called gpedit.msc (Group Policy Editor), this looked like what I wanted. It allowed me to add any number of special privileges to any user, and I did add SeSecurityPrivilege to the bkupuser1 - However, when I started a CMD prompt as the user and did: whoami /all I could see the privilege was NOT granted to the user. I tried gpupdate /force, but still no good. I rebooted, still no good. I tried using another program rsop.ms…

I am new to Windows Server 2008 and I have a problem regarding folder/file or sharing permissions. I have created a new share on server 2008 and added a test-group. I've set the share permissions to FC,C & R. Then i added testuser to the test-group in the security tab of shared folder. The problem: my test-user account logons and accesses the shared folder, instead of recieving "access denied" the folder display a blank page. (there are files and sub-folders which I'm trying to restrict the user from seeing)

Hello, I Have a Server with Windows 2008 standard edition SP1 installed. The server works well, it shares internet with all the computers in the network with ICS. Everytime after about 3 days all the computers can't go on the internet anymore, but on the server still works. The only way to resolve the problem is to restart the dns service. If I Use routing and remote acces it works to share my internet connection but after a few days I have always a blue screen crash. Does anyone have some experience with this problem? Kind regards Ruben

I am trying something that is, well, not quite the normal activity for :pinstallation. I have a laptop that I want to designate as a server. I have server 2008 x64 Enterprise and it installs fine. When I get to the Initial Tasks list, the controller says "not installed". I go to the networking and assign an IP address. Then I reboot. Still no Network Controller. I further go to the Roles area and try to start installing DNS. However, the error message "No static IP address found" shows up. Hmmm. I have a static IP address on the Network Connection but... well, I am stumped. The NIC is a Realtek rtl8168 and embedded onboard. Can you tell me wh…

I can't seem to make this work on Windows Server 2008 SP2. When our environment was still on Windows 2003 account (user) lockout events showed up in security event log on the 2003 DCs that authenticated the account. The same audit policy is being applied to the new Windows 2008 DC but the account lockout events wont show up at all. I know the event ID changed and I have read about audit subcategories and used auditpol /set commands and options to play with auditing but still won't work. Has anybody experienced this? Cheers

Hello, We have a problem with our Remote Apps / TS gateway. First off al I want to scetch our infrastucture - 2003 server x64 with exchange 2007 (OWA on IIS) - going to call it server1 - 2008 server x86 with TS Gateway, remote apps & RPC website on iis7 - going to call it server2 - ISA 2006 with correct listeners to owa & ts website (incl signed ssl cert) All our traffic for OWA, TS gateway goes over SSL. So the RPC on server2 filters out the traffic for the owa website & the traffic for the ts gateway. Now sporadicly our user can't connect with their remote apps. They can login in to the TS webworkplace and see all the different installed remote a…
