Hi, I have installed an SMTP virtual server on my webserver that should relay the emails to an mail server. This works fine, but now, once a day, the SMTP virtual server suddenly stoppes and my emails are not delivered anymore untill I manually restart the smtp server. Does someone know why this happens and how to prevent it? Thx

Hi, I want to give another user (bkupuser1) the SeSecurityPrivilege like Administrator has. I can see the Administrator has this right by doing Run As Admin on a CMD box, the typing whoami /all I tried to do it with a program called gpedit.msc (Group Policy Editor), this looked like what I wanted. It allowed me to add any number of special privileges to any user, and I did add SeSecurityPrivilege to the bkupuser1 - However, when I started a CMD prompt as the user and did: whoami /all I could see the privilege was NOT granted to the user. I tried gpupdate /force, but still no good. I rebooted, still no good. I tried using another program rsop.ms…

We have NTP configured for our server but the server's timezone list only shows GMT. Isn't UTC more accurate than GMT ? It is not listed.

I am new to Windows Server 2008 and I have a problem regarding folder/file or sharing permissions. I have created a new share on server 2008 and added a test-group. I've set the share permissions to FC,C & R. Then i added testuser to the test-group in the security tab of shared folder. The problem: my test-user account logons and accesses the shared folder, instead of recieving "access denied" the folder display a blank page. (there are files and sub-folders which I'm trying to restrict the user from seeing)

Hello, I Have a Server with Windows 2008 standard edition SP1 installed. The server works well, it shares internet with all the computers in the network with ICS. Everytime after about 3 days all the computers can't go on the internet anymore, but on the server still works. The only way to resolve the problem is to restart the dns service. If I Use routing and remote acces it works to share my internet connection but after a few days I have always a blue screen crash. Does anyone have some experience with this problem? Kind regards Ruben

I am trying something that is, well, not quite the normal activity for :pinstallation. I have a laptop that I want to designate as a server. I have server 2008 x64 Enterprise and it installs fine. When I get to the Initial Tasks list, the controller says "not installed". I go to the networking and assign an IP address. Then I reboot. Still no Network Controller. I further go to the Roles area and try to start installing DNS. However, the error message "No static IP address found" shows up. Hmmm. I have a static IP address on the Network Connection but... well, I am stumped. The NIC is a Realtek rtl8168 and embedded onboard. Can you tell me wh…

I can't seem to make this work on Windows Server 2008 SP2. When our environment was still on Windows 2003 account (user) lockout events showed up in security event log on the 2003 DCs that authenticated the account. The same audit policy is being applied to the new Windows 2008 DC but the account lockout events wont show up at all. I know the event ID changed and I have read about audit subcategories and used auditpol /set commands and options to play with auditing but still won't work. Has anybody experienced this? Cheers

Hello, We have a problem with our Remote Apps / TS gateway. First off al I want to scetch our infrastucture - 2003 server x64 with exchange 2007 (OWA on IIS) - going to call it server1 - 2008 server x86 with TS Gateway, remote apps & RPC website on iis7 - going to call it server2 - ISA 2006 with correct listeners to owa & ts website (incl signed ssl cert) All our traffic for OWA, TS gateway goes over SSL. So the RPC on server2 filters out the traffic for the owa website & the traffic for the ts gateway. Now sporadicly our user can't connect with their remote apps. They can login in to the TS webworkplace and see all the different installed remote a…

Hi guys, When building servers on our LAN part of our policy is to place them in a segregated network until they are patched, Anti-virus is installed, and a security audit has been done. While on the segrated network the machine has not internet connectivity. Part of the build process places the server into a critical patching cycle using our 3rd party software, which in theory means the patches will downloaded and installed through the course of the night. This does not always happen, and if the patching window is missing this can add an extra day onto the server build process because we need to correct the problem and then wait for the next patch window. Is …

hi. I've just setup Server 2008 for a friend with active directory and DNS installed. The domain is companyname.local and the server is using the ADSL modem IP settings for gateway and DNS. There are 5 workstations that are in the domain, their DNS is set too the server IP address. All I have configured is user accounts with passwords, folder redirection with GPO and a couple of shared folders. They only seem to be able to access the more common websites (amazon, bbc.co.uk, etc). Do I need to set up anything for the DNS as I have no knowingly configured this.

Hi, I'm working on preparing a base W2k8 image for a server rollout. Everything was working fine until I cleaned up the image before I took a snap clone of it. All I did was remove my domain user account and one other person's domain user account from the machine so that the user accounts wouldn't appear on the rolled out image. I made sure I went through the correct process of removing users, i.e. under system settings, goto Advanced System settings, the Advanced Tab, the User Profiles Settings, and deleting the 2 user accounts. I didn't touch anything else. I took the snap clone and assumed everything was ok. I then tried to logon to the machine using my domain…

Hi guys, I'm wondering if there's an equivalent to the /checkupgradeonly switch for the 2008 RC2 install. I have several applications running on the server and I plan to do a clean install rather than an upgrade in any case, but I would like to verify that they will still work once 2008 RC2 is installed. Is there any such feature? Thanks.

We've been running Server 2008 for about six months, and I've been getting this persistently recurring problem with the server becoming unable to find the internet connection, even though all the users on the network can connect to the web OK, and access all the files. The antivirus (Trend) shows a disconnect and the AV lists go stale until eventually the desktops will show AV out of date warnings. I'll try to open a browser on the server and just get the old can't-find-the-page screen. Rebooting solves it, but that brings up another issue I'm having: it takes the server 45 minutes or so to reboot! I'm just an "in house" guy and not trained administrator, but I have to…

Last month I got into hosting my website from my house via Windows Server 2008. I have installed PHP, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin. The only thing left for me to do is get one problem solved and that is that my ISP blocks port 80 so I have to use a different port. That is fine however one thing, the only way I can connect to my website is to type www.mywebsite.com:8080 or whatever port I choose (port 7654 ext.) the only known solution that I have come across is NO-ip.com's service This service is located on this page: So your ISP has decided to block port 80? basically this paid service allows you to use a non http standard port (80) and it will redirect it to the port you ar…
