Hi, I have just installed the application on this server in a COM directory. The problem I am having is related to the firewall settings. RPC (135) connection is being made, but client cannot reach port which is dynamically opened by the server in range of 5000-5500. I set port range 5000-5500 in Component Services\My Computer\Properties\ Default protocol tab\ - properties of DCOM Protocols ... When client is trying to connect it gets error: RPC server is not available. If I switch off Winsows firewall (in Windows Firewall Settings) then everything is ok. What should I do to allow traffic on (5000-5500)? Why is not inbound connection (on dcom calls) opened?

Hi, I am using Windows 2008 Server and have it installed as a Windows 2000 domain controller. Out of pure stupidity I changed the drive letter which contained the SYSVOL share and managed to lock myself out of the computer. I somehow managed to get back in a restore most things, however I still have problems with backup. Windows complains about creating the shadow copy and looking into the Event Viewer I found out I had still not fully handled the File Replication Service to handle properly. The old SYSVOL location was e:\windows\sysvol\domain and the new one is c:\windows\sysvol\domain. But I continue getting the error: "The File Replication Service cannot re…

After setting up iSCSI and trying to set up the disks using disk management I am experiencing 1. frequent crashes of windows explorer 2. When going to disk management it does not connect and says "Unable to connect to Virtual Disk Service", MMC, Virtual Disk Service, and the iscsi service all appear to be working okay. Anyone have any idea what went wrong? *Edit*: It appears that disk management works only if iscsi service is disabled :(... and I NEED iscsi :(

In attempting to install Windows Server 2008 I get past all of the prompts and choices to the point where the install says: Copying Windows files (0%)... The install never advances beyond this 0% however and eventually the hourglass turns into a regular pointer cursor. There are no error messages or anything to help understand the problem... just the freeze. Any ideas or experience with this? On a less important but also confusing issue, I notice that the Windows install - Advanced option - doesn't give me an option to partition my drive. I do reach one window that says: To make changes to partitions, restart Windows from the installation disc. But…

Hello All, I am new to TS but I want to setup a terminal server for a primary school in the netherlands. 30 users will connect to the server. Some users will use program X & Z and others will use program X & Y. How can I hide program Z for the second group of users... do I do this with security settings on the folders? Or is there an other (simpler way).. I need the users to have a windows look a like desktop (also for learning purposes (children need to get familiar with windows)) so remote apps is not an option... Thanks for your advise. Peter

Hi all! I read the product overview of MS Server 2008 Standard Edition and come across this issue: What does it means by "Supports up to 4 multi-core processors"? I mean, let say if I am using a dual core processors, does that means 2 of those reached the max already? Or when I am using a Quad Core processors, what is the max number of such processors is supported? Thanks. Regards, MR Adin

On the same hard disk, I've noted that the UI for sharing of different sub-directories within the same hard disk is slightly different. I checked within Folder Options > View > User Sharing Wizard is checked, so I would have assumed that both shares would have to follow the UI for the 2nd sub-directory. The hard disk was previously configured on Windows XP, and, might have retained some of the sharing settings for the first share. See screenshots at http://cid-b712073b3513eb8e.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/shares%20on%20giorgio.doc.

I installed Win 2008 on an old laptop just to play with, probably should have used a virtual-PC. I can't get the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network connection to work. How do I format or unpartition C-Drive so I can go back to XP or something that will run better on this old laptop? Thanks Neal Walters 3WCloud - Achieve your goals now!

Hello all! First post! =] Ok, little bit of a background. Before I get hated on for using 2k8 as a desktop OS, I know. I've been using it for a bit now, and I really prefer this OS to anything else. This machine IS my work machine, so I'm not really using it to play games, chat on the internet, or any other shananagins. Its my work computer! Well, since it is my work machine, and NOT an actual server, persay, one that provides any services on my work network, there are some items that I want to avoid. Being a DC is a big one. But I still need access to AD and what not. So what I did was made an instance of MMC on XP SP3 with my AD, DNS, DHCP, RDP, management sit…

Hello, We have different offices in our organisation. Each of them has their own file server (Windows Server 2008) and network components (Router, Switch,...). DC is located centrally. All the users work with Windows Vista on their machines. When there is a power cut in an office, we get problems. When the power comes back up the server comes up quicker than the router and switch and because of this the server doesn't get an ip-address!! Is there some setting that will tell the server to renew his network configuration after X amount of time or at least when he has no valid ip-address? Thx Olivier
