Hi, I'm running Windows Server 2008 on a Core i7 965 with 12 GB of ram. Everything was running smootly until I enabled Hyper-V. Now, my machine is pretty sluggish with relatively no load-sometimes when you move a window (such as my computer, even) it drags really choppy and locks up for a slight second or so. Is there any reason why Hyper-V could be the cause of this and why it would do it? My mother board supports virtualization. It's listed as something like "intel virtualization" in my bios. Thanks, Mike Also; I have a copy of Virtual PC 2007. Do I still need to use Virtual PC or VMWare, etc with Hyper-V, or does it alread have everything necessary to setup v…

I installed windows 2008 ent server and configured a gpo. With vista worked and with xp did not. I read that group policies work with vista mainly and that very few policies can be applied to xp. Is this true?

Hello all, here is my problem, this is NOT the same Vista file copy slow. I have noticed when I transfer files to a share on my 2008 server the speed is between 20-35MB, but if I transfer a file to the admin share like C$ the transfer speed is 80-110MB. Why is there a difference and is there a way to get the share transfer speeds up to 80MB+? What am I missing? OK after some more research I see that if I create a share on C: I get the high transfer rates but a share on any other drive the speed is between 20-35MB. All of the drives are 15Krpm SAS drives, all connected to the SAS 6/iR controller. So why are my transfer speeds to C: so much faster than to the other dr…

After having joined a Windows XP client on my Server 2008 Domain, I noticed that the Group policies had not been applied to this profile. In my event viewer> Application Log I get an error saying "Source: Userenv - Evet ID: 1054 - Description: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (An unexpected network error occured) Group Policy processing aborted. Now I noticed that my Vista clients are all working correctly, and my server 2008 Event Viewer does not show any errors. How can I resolve this error so I can make use of the Group policies? Many thanks in advance, Anthony Zschusschen Network administrator Fernandes Concern…

Hi everyone, :-) It turns out that I have a server with SBS2008 Premium, and will not let me modify the GPO, no, not the domain controller or domain. Explaining the details below: From the SBS console, there are a couple of shortcuts where you can change the lifetime of the passwords as well, and altered the dialog SBS confirms that the changes are ok. When I go to the tab of any user, on the expiration date of the password changes are reflected correctly. But if I go to the gpmc that the value in the directive continues to 180 (in default installation). That is a strange and contradictory, but only one more fact, solving this mystery would not matter here. When I g…

Hello, I just upgraded my Windows Server 2008 w/ Hyper-V Role to a new machine, and it's freezing during the night. When I try to access it in the morning I have to reboot it every time. The equipment is all brand new: ASUS P5Q-E, 16GB ram, and 2 300GB Velociraptors RAID1. I've upgraded the Motherboard BIOS to the latest version, 2001. I've installed Windows Server 2008 SP2 RC. Still no luck. Does anyone have any idea what sort of diagnostics I can run on this bad boy to see why it's freezing like old skool days? Thanks! MichaelD

Microsoft might very well claim that Windows 7 Server Beta is designed to be deployed exclusively for testing and not production environments, but the company has an entirely different set of rules when it comes down to its own infrastructure. While letting the world test drive Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta, the software giant has already deployed the operating system, along with Internet Information Services 7.5 on the servers running Microsoft.com. The Redmond giant is referring to the process of adopting its own technology even in pre-release versions as dogfooding. And just as it was the case with previous releases of Windows Server, Microsoft.com has completed the…

we have an internal hard drive in a removeable tray as a form of backup running on win 2008 64 bit. Each day we where using a free utility to hotswap the drive which was working without any problems. but now for some reason now even with no other programs running on the server something is accessing the backup drive and we cant see it hotswap the drive. it keeps saying the drive is in use. We thought it was the backup software so temporarily have removed that and its made no difference. Has anyone else had this problem. One thing to note this only seems to happen overnight as if we reboot the server and then hotswap it works without any problems but we dont…

It seems somewhat extraordinary to me that TS doens't have an option to automatically deal with DST, and move schedules back or forward an hour as appropriate when the system clock changes due to this. Or have I missed it? cheers Steve

Greetings, Does anybody know of a driver software for Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series Mini PCI Card for Windows Server 2008? In my case it's inside a Dell Latitude C840 Laptop. I installed some XP and Vista versions, but they didn't work out... The Lan activity led flashes every once in awhile, as if it were trying to scan networks, and Device Manager shows the Ethernet Controller (3Com 3C920) and the Wireless Card, but no wireless networks can be found, so I guess it's because of the driver version. Thanks.

Hi experts, I have a strangle problem with LastInputTime from WinStationInformationW function. The problem is that it sometimes return LastInputTime with 7 min difference from its actual time. For example: last input time was at 11.10 but it returns 11.03. It usually occurs when the person logs in for the first time at the terminal server. But it can also appear during active session. I don't think that the problem is in the code, because it apperars ocassionally. Thank you in advance. Here is the code: private enum WINSTATIONINFOCLASS{ WinStationInformation = 8 } //Works only on Windows 2000/2003 [DllImport("winsta.dll")] private static extern int Win…

First off hello everyone this is my first post and I am glad to see such a nice community. I am a computer science major and have acquired a free version of windows server 2008 from my university. I am trying to setup a home network at my house and I am having some problems. Each computer in my house is setup with a static IP and DNS from OpenDNS | Providing A Safer And Faster Internet. I want to be able to login to my server through a domain controller and assign group policies ect. I ran through the dcpromo installation but I am unable to join the domain. Do I need to own the domain even if I am only using it through LAN? Also, would it be wise to set up DHCP role and r…
