I'm using Server 2008 x64 with a supported sound card, and I'm able to play sound locally on the server. However whenever I try to remote desktop to the server, it disables the sound, regardless of my RDP settings. I've tried Do Not Play and Play On Remote Computer, both disable the sound. I recently upgraded this server from 2003 to 2008, 2003 was working just fine with remote audio enabled. I use a windows 7 box to connect, again was working with 2003 using same box and connections. Sound is fine when I connect using VNC, however the overhead on the server while using VNC is very high, and I'd prefer to use RDP. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks.

hello i am quite new to this server thing. I have previously setup a windows home server for myself, however that was pretty easy. My uncle has asked me to help him setup a server for his business. He wants a server that can host his company's website (a domain has been bought), has file sharing like windows home server (the remote access feature) and a mail server. i went and downloaded a trial version of windows server 2008 enterprise to practice on before actually accepting, and i was completely lost in setting it up. Which version of windows server would be the best choice? and could someone point me to guides or guide me on how to set up the server. Thanks

I thought I would pass this along. I found it interesting since I will use Windows Server 2008 for other reason. IIS 7 being low on the list.

This may sound like a stupid question, but what type of domain is one with all servers running Windows Server 2008?

hi, I'm running Windows Server 2008 and XP pro SP2 on Virtual PC 2007 and I'm trying to set a DHCP so the XP vm's IP is set by the DHCP. I already got the IP range and subnet mask (no 100% sure if is right, I got the following range: 10.10.16.1 - 10.10.16.254 with subnet mask: 255.255.255.0). So my questions are, is there a Virtual PC setting I have to check for this? Which is the best way to configure the DHCP? and how I know that my dhcp is really working?? thankx.

Hi all, just wanted to share with you what I have experienced with 2008. Scenario: I am a developer (of .net weblications) and consider myself a power user of some sort. I have 12 years experience with Microsoft (and some other) Operating Systems... Also, to boot, I have about 8 - 9 years experience as a consultant (i.e. setting up servers / workstations / network systems). The short and curlys: I believe that it'd be nice to a have an OS where I could perform my work (as a developer), learn about the features of a server OS (like 2008), have all the features of a production platform (what 2008 offers), and have a powerful multimedia platform. So basically, ha…

Dear All, I recently installed a new server in our network with Server 2008 standard X64 version. The machine is also installed to be a fax server. Sending and receiving faxes from the server itself works fine, also the SMTP connector works fine. However if I want to connect a Vista Ultimate x64 client to the fax-share and I try to print/fax a document all goes well until I click the ' send' button. With Server 2003 x86 fax server, no problems on same client. The machine will ' think ' for a couple of seconds before giving RPC server unavailable error. I tried to search the internet for solutions but nothing found so far. Perhaps you can help me out :c…

I have a new SBS 2008 server premium edition. 3 days after initial configuration active directory exploded, exchange stopped working web services stopped at the console. I rebooted and server was ok for two weeks and did it again at 9am sharp. Normal services just started failingn when interrogatin dns for the domain controller. Restarting DNS did NOT fix the issue. Has anyone seen this. I am currently trying to pick apart what is going on. I have Exchange 2007, SQL 2008, Trend Micro CSM 3.6 on 64 bit dell box with plenty of resources.Interestingly enough, the Dell image out o fthe box failed and I had to reload it out of the box. Thanks for any help on figuring this out.…

Hi, I'm running Windows Server 2008 on a Core i7 965 with 12 GB of ram. Everything was running smootly until I enabled Hyper-V. Now, my machine is pretty sluggish with relatively no load-sometimes when you move a window (such as my computer, even) it drags really choppy and locks up for a slight second or so. Is there any reason why Hyper-V could be the cause of this and why it would do it? My mother board supports virtualization. It's listed as something like "intel virtualization" in my bios. Thanks, Mike Also; I have a copy of Virtual PC 2007. Do I still need to use Virtual PC or VMWare, etc with Hyper-V, or does it alread have everything necessary to setup v…

I installed windows 2008 ent server and configured a gpo. With vista worked and with xp did not. I read that group policies work with vista mainly and that very few policies can be applied to xp. Is this true?

Hello all, here is my problem, this is NOT the same Vista file copy slow. I have noticed when I transfer files to a share on my 2008 server the speed is between 20-35MB, but if I transfer a file to the admin share like C$ the transfer speed is 80-110MB. Why is there a difference and is there a way to get the share transfer speeds up to 80MB+? What am I missing? OK after some more research I see that if I create a share on C: I get the high transfer rates but a share on any other drive the speed is between 20-35MB. All of the drives are 15Krpm SAS drives, all connected to the SAS 6/iR controller. So why are my transfer speeds to C: so much faster than to the other dr…

After having joined a Windows XP client on my Server 2008 Domain, I noticed that the Group policies had not been applied to this profile. In my event viewer> Application Log I get an error saying "Source: Userenv - Evet ID: 1054 - Description: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (An unexpected network error occured) Group Policy processing aborted. Now I noticed that my Vista clients are all working correctly, and my server 2008 Event Viewer does not show any errors. How can I resolve this error so I can make use of the Group policies? Many thanks in advance, Anthony Zschusschen Network administrator Fernandes Concern…

Hi everyone, :-) It turns out that I have a server with SBS2008 Premium, and will not let me modify the GPO, no, not the domain controller or domain. Explaining the details below: From the SBS console, there are a couple of shortcuts where you can change the lifetime of the passwords as well, and altered the dialog SBS confirms that the changes are ok. When I go to the tab of any user, on the expiration date of the password changes are reflected correctly. But if I go to the gpmc that the value in the directive continues to 180 (in default installation). That is a strange and contradictory, but only one more fact, solving this mystery would not matter here. When I g…
