I have 2008 setup as a workstation and everything seems to be working pretty well. Its definitely better than running Server 2003 as a workstation. But, I do have one outstanding problem. I setup a VPN to connect to my work network, which works, but every time I try to access a network resource it asks for my credentials. Even if I check the "save my password" option, it asks for my creds every time. A co-worker of mine is running Vista and has the same setup (VPNs into work a lot). He does not have this problem and can access any network resources without being asked for creds. He doesn't remember having to set any options to get this behavior. How can I get s…

Hi. I want to know how can I set an environment variable with the command line permanently and per user. After some searching, I found the "setx" command, but after a lot of experimentation, I never found something that REALLY works. Let me describe the actual reason I want to do that too - I have IIS7 running and PHP as CGI (I'm thinking of moving to FCGI, but the same problem would persist there anyway, so...) and I want to allow users to have their own php.ini. As by best security practices, PHP already runs in a different application pool with a different identity, and each user/identity already has appropriate rights on. So, in order to allow users to hav…

When I choose to put the computer in Standby mode from the Turn Off Computer window the computer shuts down instead, and then when I start it up it goes into Standby mode. If that's followed by a Force Restart the computer starts up properly. Is it a hardware issue or a software issue? Everything seems to be fine in the Power Options control panel. Do you have a solution?

Hi all, I don't know if this is the right place to post this query but i thought id give it a go. I have Server 2008 enterprise installed on my home computer. Everything seemed to be going great (and still mostly is) but after configuring it with all the roles i wanted and other server apps i began experiencing noticeable and annoying lag when using it as a desktop! I know i'm probably going to get the expected comments like "what do you expect if you use a server OS as a desktop" and "of course it will lag with all the services you've installed" but i'm using it in this way because a friend recommended it and his system runs perfectly! There is no lag what…

Hi, I have a windows 2008 server serving as DC, installed DNS everything is fine. Consider the domain name as corp.mydomain.com If I go to the command prompt and typed ping x, I'll get a reply from x.mydomain.com I feel that there is something wrong with it, what do you suggest ? please note that I had configured the ISP DNS as a forwarder. My dns "Zone Name" is 100% corp.mydomain.com and my primary server is servername.corp.mydomain.com and the responsible person is hostmaster.corp.mydomain.com, I do have 2 name servers servername1.corp.mydomain.com, servername2.corp.mydomain.com my zone type is active directory-integrated primary

I have setup a new Windows 2008 Server. I installed IIS7 on this box. What I find is that only port 80 is open, at least that's all I know about. I attempted to open port 9100 using: netsh firewall add portopening TCP 9100 VNC When I run: netsh firewall show state It shows that the port is open. But when I run a port scan utility I have on another machine it does not find that port 9100 is open. What steps do I take to get port 9100 open?

I am completely new to Server 2008 (and this sort of thing in general), and I'm having some trouble. I'm trying to set up a share that is available to everyone on the network (wired or wireless) without forcing them to sign in (so guests will have access to it without resorting to a guest account. Security issues aside (nothing of real value will be stored here), is there an easy way to set this up? Alternatively, if this would allow malicious people a relatively easy backdoor into the rest of the system, how can I set up a general-use account for everyone to see the share? Thanks for the help.

Hello I have a huge problem with my new windows server 2008. My Server is invisible to all other network clients, but can connect to all clients and to the internet. I tried to Ping, connect with rdp, connect to smb...nothing works. There is a small icon on the taskbar that says "connectionstate: unknown" if i open it, there is a wizard that tells me that there was no network found. (i don't now if that has something toto with my problem, but maybe) the other zstrange thing is that i am unable to start firewall, it tells me that a dependent service called BFE is not startet. if i try to start this BFE service, there is an error: Error 5, Access Denied. i have…

I got Windows Server 2008 for free through my college and is registered in my name. All is legal. But...I copied the installation onto my DVD (because I had to download the ISO from MSDN Academic Alliance) and now my new Dell PowerEdge T100 will not recognize the CD. This Dell is fresh out of the box with nothing on it (no OS.) Anybody got any suggestions on how I can get my Windows Server 2008 installed?
