Im very new to all this. A lot of my understanding here probably sounds really stupid, so bear with me. Im building a small virtual network using VMware. Im doing this to practice and learn about subdomains, group policy, and security. When I try to enforce group policy on clients from either the parent domain or the subdomain dcs- nothing happens. I took down all the firewalls, made sure all the accept connections settings are checked on everything, but still no group policy. When I run dcdiag from the parent domain dc I get this: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\Administrator>dcdiag Dir…

Hi all, I am running a trial version of 2008 R2 and I need to resolve an issue with Coldfusion 9.0.1 and IIS 7.5 on this server before I commit to buying and running 2008 long term. This is in a home network environment, not a corporate/enterprise environment. I am running a server for web, file storage and WSUS, MS Access DB and Firebird DB. It has 8GB RAM, an I5-2400 CPU and runs Windows 2008 R2 all latest patches, WSUS 3.0 Sp2, and Firebird 2.5. I'm trying to install and run Coldfusion 9.0.1 so that I can continue to develop and maintain CF apps. But when I install CF9 it kills WSUS. No client can get updates from the server, they die with a download error.…

Presently, we have a Windows Server 2008 32-bit with SP2 installed running as our Prevx Enterprise Server 3.0 Console. It is used to deploy agents and view Windows workstations which may be Windows XP/Vista and Windows 7. The problem is if a machine name is changed or if you are trying to discover the Windows desktop/laptop on the allowed network, it does not display in Windows Network Discovery. We do not run AD we have a Linux samba server running as a workgroup. The only way for it to update and display the new machine is to reboot the server, what is the command to force a clear/reload of this data. What data is being read that populate this Network discov…

Hello, we have company dns servers (BIND 9) on linux. I created new dns zone and permitted to update it from windows server IP address. During active directory installation I selected to use already configured dns server. Everything works fine. But this official solution is very insecure (access based on IP address). Is there any way to force windows to use some HMAC key for zone updates?

Hello, I'm new here, but anyway i have strange problem, when joining computer in our domain. I have user 'xxxx', its regular user account and he is only member of domain users group. When i add new computer to domain this particular user becomes member of local "Offer Remote Assistance Helpers" group. Now i wasn't "there" when domain was created :) but there must be some kind of setting that made this happen. I do have security group membership setup in group policy and this user is definitively not in any of those settings, also when i remove him from that group, he doesnt appear anymore after gpudate. I did use group policy modeling wizard and it confirms that my set…

Hi, noob question.. I used icacls * /save /T /C /L /Q to back up the security of each of the objects. I have 13 volumes so there are 13 iterations of the command, which is run through a cmd file and backed up on a weekly basis via the task scheduler The only error is the system information object which is never saved. When I try to restore the security it fails. For example, My photos drive is V:\ To back up security from the root of v:\ - icacls * /save c:\acl_back\photos.txt /T /C /L /Q Restoring the DACLS requires the directory parameter. Since the backup is taken from the root of the volume, there are litterally hundreds of directories/folders.…

hi, i am trying to setup a network printer using a TCP/IP port, and share the printer via the server. However the printer keeps going offline. Disabling SNMP has no effect, the printer shows ready but still brings up a print error. When doing a network search for the printer via the server, it finds the printer (MFC-7360N) and the WebServices printer. However after adding the printer and leaving from 10 minutes to 1 day, the printer goes offline. I cannot perform another network printer scan unless restarting as i receive the following error "Windows could not start the TCP/IP printer part of this search because another TCP/IP search is already running. To run the …

I bought a HP Proliant n36L microserver for learning and to use it as a NAS server. I have the server running windows server 2008 r2. I want to be able to share files between my laptop and server. The Server is connected to my router by Ethernet cable. I have my laptop and Xbox on the same network and both can see each others shared folders which is what I use to stream movies to the Xbox. When I look at the network map for the server I can see my laptop on the network but cant connect to it or the shared folders but can't see the Xbox at all. I also see that the server is connected to a switch and then to the network. I'm just wondering if this is the reason for the prob…

Hello. How can I achieve this behaviour: user1 has directory dir1 with full permissions for its content, but user1 can not change permissions on files which user1 created? Is it possible? I think this is some kind of Mandatory Access Control.

Hi all, I'm having this issue that is driving me nuts so I'm at wits end here and got to ask the pros. I have a parent domain and a child domain. The child domain is located over a VPN tunnel (Sonicwall 4060) at a secure co-location. The issue is in network places the domains dont see each other, yet if I do a \\servername I can browse from each. There aretwo DCs in each location and are all running Server 2008 R2. In DNS, the zone shows the parent and child domains and DNS works OK. GPUPDATE completes successfully and from what I can see there are no communication errors in the event logs having to do with any type of AD services or connections from parent to child…

My IPv6 works great after the first router advertisement... When it comes time for radvd to second a second router advertisement it dies and the route disappears from my routing table. In short, IPv6 works great for about 100 seconds and then it dies. I can't figure out why.I'm trying to setup IPv6 over IPv4 PPTPD. The entire /64 is dedicated to the single PPP interface. Any idea why it's not working? Thanks!
