  1. In order to download xenforo styles or addons you have to be a valid xenForo license holder. In order to access all of the site you must validate your XenForo license. To validate that you are a owner of a valid XenForo license do the following: Log in to the XenForo customer area. Click on the Validation token link for you license. Copy the license token to your clipboard. Log in to your Forum² account area. On the left select the XenForo License Validation link. Paste the validation token in the top box and domain in the other. Submit the form. You will now show up as a valid XenForo license holder and have access to all parts of Forum². As an added perk as a valid license holder you have the ability to use a custom title and can change it as often as you like. The license token and domain are only used to validate that you own a valid XenForo license. The information is not stored and it is purged once validation process is complete. You only have validate as a licensed user 1 time.

  3. I want to apologize for the downtime. I was in Tennessee looking at property. The power was not fully restored when I left. I though the back up power would hold things together in between. It didn't. Site went offline on Tuesday as I was doing an upgrade. I wasn't able to access the server until this morning when I got home. Power was still off. It came back at about 1630ET. It still up and down. Backup generator is keeping up this time. Thanks for understanding

  5. I have created 2 new user groups. They are: VIP Visiting Admin The visiting admin group is for admins from other sites that are active participants here. The VIP group is for members that actively participate in the discussions, create new topics and contribute articles. Members promoted to this group will get extra privileges and get a shiny badge to denote that they are indeed VIP's. If you have any questions I'll answer them.

  6. I also use them. They’re good for navigational purposes and can help users find topics a lot easier too.

  8. Not now. I prefer to let someone else do the hard work while I get the benefits. LOL. I am thinking about starting a forum. Not sure what topic. If I ever do pick a topic I'll start one.

  13. I think a major mistake is starting the site, and attempting to get, say... 5 or 6 staff. I've never understood that. 3 threads, and they'll have 6 staff members listed in the block....

  17. I Couldn't agree more because outdated software might cause some security problems. When you regularly update, it will ensure compatibility. My piece of advise is to consider implementing two-factor authentication and strong passwords. This will boost security.

  32. I agree with that. A community manager role would be good for this on a forum, but as the forum grows bigger, the CM could appoint mentors and change their role to lead them.

  33. It has pretty much everything. In fact the other forum makers should take a look at what they did in the last couple years.

  34. .info has a bad rep for being spammers paridise. Most SE won't even list them. They have cleaned up there act. They used to be free so spammers took full advantage. I think they now cost money. damage was done. The other new top level domains learned their lesson from watching what happened to .info domains. Most of them are very cheap, but, very cheap is still too much for spammers and scammers.

  36. I admit I have been lax adding new topics to spur discussions since I opened the community. The reason is that the current structure of forums are old and antiquated. The current structure, category hierarchy with linear list of threads, has outlived it's usefulness. People want to see what's new and interesting without having to click several links to get to the content. Saying that I am looking at options to move this community into the 21ST century. As it is now this community, as well as thousands like it, are stuck in the early 2000's. This is the single most reason why forums are failing. I am looking at alternatives. I have narrowed the choice down to either Vanilla, Flarum or Discourse. At this point in time I am leaning towards Discourse or Vanilla since I have experience with those. I had test sites up for staff of my tech site to play with before a planned migration. Discourse scales well as traffic to the site grows. Styling it is fairly simple since it can all be done by editing a few css files. As it is Discourse is the front runner. I have experience with Vanilla since I was an admin on a site that migrated from vbulletin to Vanilla. At first activity slowed, but once the users got used to the way it works activity increased. New user signups also increased and posting by those new users also increased. Flarum I have no experience with, but, I do like the aesthetics of it. I might install a test version to see if it will be a viable option. Look for changes to come. If this forum is to be a major player it has to step into the future.

  37. I'm getting ready to dive into both (Discourse & Flarum) myself.... There are a few things in wanting to test out and investigate. I think with a little bit of creativity, something amazing will come out of it.

  39. I used to be an active code hacker of UBB and later wwwthreads. I did do a couple addons for vbulletin that were specific to my site, but, never released them publicly. Haven't done any coding in quit a few years. I loved perl because of my background in C, but, never really took a liking to php.

  40. Hi,I have a little question about dns settings for domains.I want to point multiple domain names to my server that have just 1 ip and no nameservers.Would it work if i make a A-record on each domain and points them to the IP, and install some sort of controll panel like "cpanel". Will thedomains be pointed to the right website on the server? If there is other ideas to solve this it would be appreciated too. Thanks!

  44. Hi, port forwarding can be made trough Windows Firewall or another firewall. From what *I* know, you cannot do it via "NAT" configuration. Windows firewall, in a network / domain environment, should be controlled with FIREWALL WITH ADVANCED SECURITY. Basically, Windows Firewall open ports for common communications (HTTP and so on). Let's make another example, if you install Bit Torrent, your firewall asks if the program is allowed or not. If you say YES, then, the current profile is updated. In Windows Firewall there are 3 types of profiles: Private, Domain, Public. Not all 3 have the same settings. You can easily lockdown your firewall removing ports that you don't need or by playing with settings of profile (right click on a profile and then read what you can do). If you need more help, let me know.

  47. Hello and good luck with your studies. Most small to mid-sized businesses will have more a generalist or two who over see all of the server roles. In most of these situations you will need to know: Active Directory with Group Policy - How and why to make new OUs. - How to make and apply group policies especially for -- password complexity -- folder redirection -- various Internet Explorer settings -- server security [*] - How to make effective groups both for the business management and for managing network access (they aren't always the same) [*] - Understanding replication [*] - Sites DNS -- you can't have AD without it. - issues of split DNS vs single DNS - AD integrated vs separate DNS - forwarding - replication - adding hosts to external DNS - mx priority DHCP - basic configuration is sufficient for most small/med businesses. Understand how DHCP works, APIPA, and how reservations work. - larger networks may need DHCP forwarding/relay or multiple DHCP servers and scopes. File Services - Know how to create shares and properly apply both Share and NTFS permissions and how the two interact - how to map drives through command line, scripts, group policy Print Services - How to install and share a printer (includes permissions) - How to map printers to clients - how to upgrade drivers on printers and clients - how to migrate printers to a new server Those are the very basics that just about every company that has a Windows AD domain is going to be using. Web servers are also very common. Terminal servers a bit less so, but still common. If you get all of the above down, you'll have a good idea of what else you want or need to know.

  48. You can do what you describe above. Just edit the dns so that www leads to the current server and then the .com leads to the internal server.

  49. See here: http://kurtsh.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DA410C7F7E038D!3018.entry It's not a normal edition sold at a promotional price. It's a one-year-limited license version that will keep working after the license expires. What I don't know is whether windows update will keep working after the license has expired.
