  1. I like the idea of hosting contests and I’ve hosted a few on the previous versions of my forum. Especially posting contests, they work well.

  2. I want to apologize for the downtime. I was in Tennessee looking at property. The power was not fully restored when I left. I though the back up power would hold things together in between. It didn't. Site went offline on Tuesday as I was doing an upgrade. I wasn't able to access the server until this morning when I got home. Power was still off. It came back at about 1630ET. It still up and down. Backup generator is keeping up this time. Thanks for understanding

  4. I have created 2 new user groups. They are: VIP Visiting Admin The visiting admin group is for admins from other sites that are active participants here. The VIP group is for members that actively participate in the discussions, create new topics and contribute articles. Members promoted to this group will get extra privileges and get a shiny badge to denote that they are indeed VIP's. If you have any questions I'll answer them.

  5. I also use them. They’re good for navigational purposes and can help users find topics a lot easier too.

  7. Not now. I prefer to let someone else do the hard work while I get the benefits. LOL. I am thinking about starting a forum. Not sure what topic. If I ever do pick a topic I'll start one.

  13. I don’t either. I’m not a fan of shoutboxes. I think they take away all the general banter talk away from certain forums, which isn’t a good thing.

  14. If you need a server with ddos protection, knownhost offers servers with ddos protection. You can also use cloudflare’s waf’s feature to block malicious traffic.

  15. A community means a group of people who share their ideas because they care about these ideas. A community does not become a community when there are no organic activities. Interaction in communities needs to be voluntarily, when you have to pay someone to post or buy posting package, or even engage in post exchange, your community is not a community/

  16. I also use Google alerts to come up with new content ideas. Quora and Reddit is a gold mine as there’s a lot of ways that you can spin their content & come up with your own content.

  19. I build backlinks to my forum via my forum signatures on other communities, reddit and Tumblr. I also add my forum to directories. I try to diversify my backlink profile, so there are various sources of backlinks.

  20. I do not like shoutbox in forums. I believe all the discussions in the forum should happen in the main forums. I have never used shoutbox in my forums.

  22. Great article! I’d like to add that a good way to build backlinks is by promoting on Reddit on subreddits that allow you to do so. such as: r/SaaSSales r/SaaSMarketing r/zerotosaas r/TestMyApp r/startups\_promotion r/startup\_resources r/Startup\_Ideas r/SideProject r/SaaSroasting r/newproducts r/microsaas r/micro\_saas r/indiehackers r/indiebiz r/IMadeThis r/SaaS r/webdev r/hwstartups r/smallbusiness r/promotereddit r/freepromote r/Business\_Ideas r/Entrepreneur r/startups r/roastmystartup https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/s/BkeyCk5Emi r/StartupLaunches/ You can also build backlinks by adding your forum to directories that offer them as well.

  24. Invision all the way. In fact depending on what v5 looks and feels like I might migrate some of the sites. I am a legacy customer so renewal prices are pretty good. Even if they're only good for 6 months. I activated 1 license already to see how it would do while importing a large amount of data. Came through without a hitch.

  31. One thing I like to do is create a strategy for my forum. I'll create it on Word and follow it like the gossple Usually, I'm the only one that ever sees it but it keeps me motivated and in line with my goals.

  32. I want to apologize for the downtime. The servers are located in Tampa. Hurricane Milton hit the area hard. Power was off then on then off again. Last time for almost 24 hours. The site is up at this time. I'm hoping the worst is over. Thanks for hanging in there.

  40. If a feature is disabled there is no strain extra strain on the server. Files are there, but, you could remove them. In IPB there is an option when you disable the module to remove it. I think vbulletin is the same. They don't load. I was always in favor of everything included with no addons. It works seemlessy and built by the main devs.

  41. Me and you are a lot alike! When I left forums for a while it was because I was in pain, a drunk, and extremely depressed. It took a long, hard, and dark road to get me out of all that. The outdoors is what saved me. But I find it funny that people kept joining while the forum just waited around for you to come back -- if only it was a bunch of active members who policed themselves and you came back to a self-created big board. All of a sudden, they're like, who's this AWS guy LOL.

  43. A few years ago there was a proposal to Icann to create .forum top level domains. It took forever and now they are available. I have a 3 of them: https://computerhelp.forum https://freepchelp.forum https://offtopic.forum I was sceptical at first and bought those 3 because I lost the domains the sites were on when I was ill. They were cheap, $4.95 each so I thought why not. Those domains have been online now for almost 6 months. I will say this Google loves the .forum domains. Those sites get almost double the traffic that old sites on .com domains got. If those visitors would only convert to active users. I can dream. What you think about the .forum doamins and all the other lesser known top level domains? Oh, I also have a .online and .tech site, but, that's for another thread.

  44. Forum software remained stagnate for a long time. The linear interface is a dinosaur. These packages are starting to change that. Here are some of the newer software packages: Discourse: A modern, open-source discussion platform that offers features like real-time notifications and mobile responsiveness. Flarum: A lightweight, open-source forum software that emphasizes simplicity and ease of use. Vanilla: Another lightweight package that has the more modern look. If you know of any other new style forum packages let us know.
