  3. After the holidays are behind us I am going to put my attention to getting things done here I've been pushing off. Mainly because I was combining my tech sites. That's done so it's time for Forum Squared to get the things done I should have already done. List of planned items: Upgrade to Invision 5 beta. Currently at beta 9.1 Add the link directory. I removed it after I had a database crash. Revamp the downloads section and add more downloads. Work on the resources section. Get some articles off the drawing board and onto the site. Move my personal blog to here. This is not a priority so it might be a while. That's for starters. There is a lot in v5 so I'm sure there will be more that I come up with. I also plan to incorporate a revenue sharing system to give back to active users. Investigating how to put it together using Pages and Commerce. Happy holidays everyone.
  4. The biggest hurdle is to keep from getting bored. If you get bored you slack off and the community suffers. Everyone goes through burnout. If it happens too soon the community will die. This doesn't hurt older established sites. They have more than 1 person running things.
  5. I am happy to announce a new spam detection module in Discourse AI Over the past few months, we have sadly noticed that Akismet’s performance has been quite uneven. AI-based spam detection allows you to better control how spam scanning works in your community. We have seen very good results on a few forums now. Please share your experience here. For those self-hosting or generally looking for a “free” way of using these tools, have a look at OpenRouter. There are quite a few free LLMs out there that can do a reasonable job scanning for spam. This allows admins to check for any new updates to this page immediately. Filter by user in the review queue Admins can now use the filter Reviewed By in the review queue to see all the flagged content a user raised. The “stable” branch is more focused on lack of change than lack of bugs - all releases, including those on tests-passed and beta are production ready. Background Under the current default settings, when signing up for an account with an e-mail that has already been registered, the sign-up form will inform of that: We are changing the default setting to not give away this information. Instead, the sign-up form will look like this, regardless of whether the e-mail is already registered or not: This also affects password resets in similar ways. With the setting disabled, the form provides immediate feedback that the e-mail is in the system: With the setting enabled it does not disclose that information: Why are we changing it? A malicious actor can use this feedback to perform an account enumeration, letting them know whether certain users exist on this forum, which can then let them target those users with phishing. Won’t this affect legitimate users negatively? The case here is if a user forgot that they already have an account, and they try to sign up or reset password using the same e-mail, which should be a relatively rare occurrence. But even then, they will just receive an e-mail letting them know they already have an account. The change ultimately does not affect legitimate users’ ability to sign up or access their accounts. But I prefer the old default If you have changed this setting at any point, the new default will not override the custom setting. If you want to change back to the old default, you can set the hide_email_address_taken setting back to false.   9. We’ve updated the terminology in Discourse’s interface to improve consistency across the platform. What was previously called a “color scheme” is now referred to as a “color palette” throughout the user interface. What’s Changed The term “color scheme” has been replaced with “color palette” across the Discourse interface. This change affects what you’ll see in the admin area, customization settings, and other UI elements. The functionality remains exactly the same - only the terminology has changed. What to Expect If you’re writing documentation or guides about Discourse, please use “color palette” going forward. You may still see references to “color scheme” in some documentation as we gradually update all materials. For developers: References to “scheme” will remain in the codebase (variable names, function names, etc.) for technical stability. Why This Change? This update brings more consistency to our interface language and aligns with modern design terminology. While this is a small change, we believe that consistent terminology makes the platform more intuitive to use. Questions?   10. I've been following along with the topics in the forum for the cloud customers. It seems like things are real good for them. Not sure how it would be for someone like me with more than one site. I might put a site on the Invison cloud and see what it's like. Prices aren't bad.
  11. Here is a scenario. A visitor signs up for your site. His first post is an introduction. In the introduction he drops a link to his community. The next post are his sites stats which he comes back to everyday to add too. Each time with a link in the stats. Doesn't add any real content or engage with other users threads. What would do? Warn? Ban? Thoughts.

  13. It's tough to get a forum going now that there is Reddit, Facebook and the like. It can still be done. Takes lots of hard work. You need to decide on a niche. After that decide on the software. If you want just a forum and don't want to pay for the software use phpBB or myBB. You can convert ti a paid software after the community gets off the ground. If you want more than a forum then you should look into using Wordpress with a forum addon. You can add galleries later if you like. Once you get the forum running the real work starts. Promote it, add content and promote it. Promotion is the hardest part. As long as you have content that is. Good luck. When you get started let us know. Some of us can help get you started.

  15. A community’s data is more than just numbers and names; it reflects the community’s pulse—what members care about, discuss, and engage with. This data includes all of the knowledge generated through those discussions which should be a lasting resource, always accessible to your community. However, many platforms make it difficult to access your community’s history, or even limit how much history you can access, hindering your ability to retain and leverage valuable insights. Others may prevent you from taking your data with you if you decide to move. Choosing the right platform from the start helps you future-proof your community.   17. This is something I didn't know that Discourse had at its core. Discourse really is in the forefront of forum software. It's fast to catch on with enterprise. Too bad it's slow to catch on with the hobbyist.
  18. What do have planned for the holiday season? Visiting family. Staying home. I am staying home with my wife. We plan to go to some of the festivities in the neighborhood. Nothing fancy.

For those unfamiliar, OpenRouter provides a unified interface that allows integration of hundreds of language models from dozens of language model providers, including Google, Open AI, Anthropic, Mistral, SambaNova, Together AI, Groq, and more. For those who have not yet dabbled in the world of AI due to costs, OpenRouter offers a wide selection of free models, including the free tier of Gemini Models and a selection of free (low context token) Llama models. (We missed November, but we’re back and still aiming to do these every month). Your questions and feedback are welcome! Kicking off Support for multiple drafts Currently, Discourse only supports one topic draft at a time. We’re starting a project to remove this limitation so that you can have multiple drafts going at once. This change will make it easier to write in Discourse, since you won’t have to worry about completing an entire topic in one go or composing your work in another tool first. Admin config pages for site appearance We’ve been deep in planning an extensive set of improvements to how admins can configure the look and feel of their sites. This includes a new layout for the config pages relating to branding, as well as themes and theme components, with a special focus on colour palettes. The plans for this have become more firm over the past few weeks, and we’re getting started with developing these exciting new interfaces. In full swing Composer redesign We’ve made a lot of progress over the past month by defining our design direction, choosing ProseMirror as our editor library, and completing a good deal of refactoring to ensure moving to our new composer goes smoothly. Soon, we will begin internal testing of the initial version of our redesigned composer soon and implement improvements to the composer toolbar. Admin interface design consistency We’re continuing our work on improving the consistency of the admin interface based on the design patterns we have settled upon. These updates are making navigating the admin a more consistent and pleasant experience. Chat with Ask Discourse directly from your site on our hosting We’ve expanded ask.discourse.com to now be usable directly from your site. You can now ask discourse_ai Discourse related questions via chat. We hope this adds to an even easier way to get help right when you need it. Experimental rollout of AI features on our hosting We have started experimentally rolling out Discourse AI features. If enabled, customers will not need a 3rd party Large Language Model (LLM) provider as Discourse will provide a hosted open-weights LLM solution. We using these experiments to learn about handling hosted LLM volume and to drop barriers so more people can adopt AI features. Wrapping up Simplified invites We have made the process of creating and sending invites friendlier and easier to use, with some of the most common flows improved, and advanced features simplified. New full screen pages for signup and login After thoroughly testing our new full screen signup and login pages (thanks to everyone who contributed to that effort!), we’re ready to begin rolling out these new screens. If you’re ready to make the change now, you can do so by enabling the full page login setting. Short summaries on topic lists Iterating on short AI summaries for hot topics, we have now expanded support across all topic lists, toggleable on or off anytime by the user. Expect this to be out soon for you! Better pageview tracking for all sites on our hosting After sharing Understanding pageview tracking on hosted plans on Meta, we’ve now finished moving all our hosted customers over to an improved way of tracking and reporting pageviews that doesn’t count crawlers and other traffic toward the pageview limits on their plan. This also provides more detailed insights into site traffic, see Understanding pageviews and the site traffic report. Sunsetting NSFW/Toxicity for AI triage We will soon be officially removing NSFW and Toxicity features from Discourse AI. We are now recommending customers use AI triage via the Automation plugin for a superior performing and customizable experience. We already have guides on Meta on how to use it to combat spam and detect NSFW/Toxicity content. Easier developer environment setup with Dev Containers We’ve made it easier to set up a development environment for working on Discourse with Dev Containers. This almost entirely eliminates the need to install/configure Discourse-specific tools/dependencies on your local machine, and makes it very easy to keep up-to-date as Discourse evolves over time.   21. What's a normal day as you go about running your community? What do you do first? What is your daily ritual? Myself as an admin have a set way we approach each day. I may change the routine if problems arise. For the most part I do the same thing everyday. It works for me. What works for you?
  22. You just opened your first community. You got it set up like you want. You're now ready to engage in conversation with your users. Starting a community is not all roses. There will be problems that arise from the start. What do you think will be the hardest task that you will have to deal with?
  23. Forum Squared needs to add another staff member. The role will be to start topics and engage in the threads by our users. You'll also keep things in line and make sure no gets out of hand. This will eventually turn into a paid position once the site grows and starts to make money. It will be paid based on a revenue sharing model. If you are interested send me a PM.
  24. We just added support for the new family of Amazon Nova models. These models are very price competitive; the most advanced model (Nova Pro) is priced similarly to Claude 3.5 Haiku and supports a 300k context window. The models work quite well for common tasks such as translation, proofreading, triaging, and summarization.   25. We rolled out experimentally enabling Summarize and AI search with one click. Today we are doing it for Helper. Discourse AI - Helper is now available for Standard, Business, and Free tiers without the need for a 3rd party Large Language Model (LLM) provider. This means Discourse is now providing a hosted open-weights LLM for customers to enable Helper. How do I enable Helper? You have the power to enable or disable Helper at any time from the What's New section. All related customizations are available within the Discourse AI plugin settings. What does being an experiment mean? This means that the AI feature is subject to change at any time, including its feature set and availability. We are using this as a means to test things out while opening the doors for more users to enjoy new features and give feedback. For more information on Helper check here.
