This is a good read and should be read by everyone.

I used to be an active code hacker of UBB and later wwwthreads. I did do a couple addons for vbulletin that were specific to my site, but, never released them publicly. Haven't done any coding in quit a few years. I loved perl because of my background in C, but, never really took a liking to php.

Didn't you get your start with forum in that niche? I seem to remember being a member of your early forum which was about aquariums. I was doing research when I wanted to get started with salt water.

Yes it is. He is either the owner or lead admin. Not sure which.

I like visiting your site. If I were you I'd keep it going as is. I know there are ebs and flows with activity, but, for the most part the site is doing pretty good.

Cloaked submitted a new link: GeneralDiscussion.com General discussion forum.

It's Xon from SpaceBattles that took over the addons. I think Stuart just took over the ones he funded. I'm thinking there something done behind the scenes. Hood might have been told to remove or turn over his mods or xenforo staff would remove him and his mods. He probably wants to come back at some point.

My goal with this site is to make a viable resource. I am going to take baby steps one thing at a time approach like you suggest.I am working on a road map and once complete that is what I follow. It will be fluid so as something is complete something is added. I also listen to the users. That's always been my style.

Until I can get the directory installed and running lets post the sites you've owned or were a member of staff. I myself have owned many and was staff on many more. Here are the big boards I owned, sold or closed. Extreme Visual Basic - This used to be at a different URL which the new owner failed to renew. I sold it to iNet Interactive at the height of it's popularity. When I sold it there was an aversage of 500 users online at any time and 2000 new posts a day. It was number 1 in it's niche. What Pisses You Off? - This was a forum I started as an off shoot to a thread that was posted on my visual basic forum in the Random Thoughts forum. I never expected it to become as popular as it did. I sold it and the new owner immediately deleted it and closed it. Just BS - I started this site after a few of the users of What Pisses You Off asked me to since WPYO closed. It was sold and I don't think the new owner ever re-opened it. Computer Help Forums - I sold this site a couple years ago when I wanted to shift focus back to Free PC Help. These are the sites I started from scratch and then turned over and sold. I have also bought a few sites. Lets see your sites.

Hey devs. See this thread to showcase your skills. Attention Coders - Forum² is Looking For You
-
I'm going to revive an old thread rather than start a new one. I host myself. I have Comcast MetroE business class service and have some of my servers on it. I also have 2 servers colocated at Hurricane Electric for redundancy. All my servers run Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2. All the sites I have, 3 in total now with this 1, run in their own VM in Hyper-V. The colo boxes run a mirror of the live sites and in case of an outage can take over until the main servers come back online.

Simple poll for all of you to participate in. I myself have no problems with competing site owners or staff coming here and even linking to the site as long as they participate. Allowing competing sites can only do good. I see no downside to it. What's your thoughts?

Attention all addon coders no matter what forum software you code addons for. I am starting a competition with a $500 grand prize to the coder that comes up with an original never done before addon. I am sure there are addons that were requested at various forum software communities that were never created. Those are what I am looking for. Create something new and original and win $500. Here are the rules: Addon must be something that enhances the functionality of the forum software it is coded for. Addon must not be encoded and must not contain any callbacks or back doors. Addon must work as described for selected software package. I understand bugs can be expected, but, the addon must be a working addon. Addon must not be a simple throw together. I am looking for a more complex addon like a reviews system or blog. If someone suggests an addon in this thread and it has never been done before then use that as an idea to create as an entry. When all addons have been submitted I will create test forums so that the addons can be tested in the platform the developer chose. Once users have had a chance to test out the addons on those installs they will vote for the winner. In order for the prize to be awarded there must be 3 submissions by 3 different coders. Contest closes January 1ST, 2017 and all submission must be in by that date. Winner will be paid out on March 1ST, 2017. Upon completion of the contest the winning entry will become the exclusive property of Schwarz Networks. Good luck to the participants.

It's not so much not getting draw into an argument as it is knowing when to exit. I used to get drawn in very easily and would get hostile. I have learned to control my emotions much better. I will still argue my point. Thing is if I see it's a situation where the person will not yield then I exit the thread.

It seems this site has come under the eye of the owner of a similar site. It seems this owner has decided that any members of his forum that join here will be banned on his site. I myself find this to be childlike behavior. Although since I was an admin at said owners site I understand the paranoia he is exhibiting by banning his members that join here. If you are a member of said admin forum we welcome you here. You will not be stalked as a member here and are free to join any forum you please and post anything you want. We will not ban you for saying something on another site. We will not ban you if you post a link to a competing site. In fact we encourage you to post links to competing sites. The more exposure Forum² gets the better for all of us. If you sign up for an account here I would advise you to not use the same username you use on the other site. I would not want your registration here to jeopardize your status on that other admin forum if you wish to continue to participate on both sites. On the other hand if you are a member here and wish to join the other forum you can rest assured you will not be stalked, hunted, ridiculed or banned. Forum² is a professional forum run by a professional that understands that having a good reputation with competing sites is a sure fire way of building trust and membership.

I had a site on Discourse for a while. Only reason it's still not online is because I had it on an old server and it died. Since it wasn't a critical site I didn't try to revive it. I have looked at Flarum and I do like it. I think the time has come for forums to take the next step. I see that step as being Discourse or Flarum.

I agree 100% with you. That situation as well as other could be handled much differently. It's fairly clear if you are in with any os the staff you're safe to do as you please.

We've all seen new forum communities pop up all the time. Some become instant hits and some never take off. New forum admins tend to make the same mistakes which cause their forum to be less attractive to new sign ups. Lets start a list of the common mistakes new forum admins make. I'll start. Having a popup, usually with some ugly graphic, encouraging you to join the community. A welcome message isn't a problem it's those javascript popups you come across on so many new sites. New admins think they are cool. Another mistake new forum admins make is they will put Google Adsense ads on the site with no content. I don't have a problem with ads. I have a problem with the ads I see when I visit a new forum. Since there is little to no content to serve relevant ads you get those girl friend finder ads or a public service ads. Lets hear some other mistakes new forum admins make.

That is version 3? That sure looks like it was ahead of it's time. Surprising that it only recently is getting more popular.- 6 replies
