Hyper-V has everything you need to run virtual OS. No need for for vmware and the like.
I have a hyper-v server with just about the same specs as you and have no problems. I do notice a slight lag when I have more than 4 virtial boxes running at once. It is very minor and not like you describe. How much memory have you allocated to each visrtual instance?
Check event viewer to see if any thing is logged during the even.
Sure sounds strange to be. Maybe somethiong in the bios that is putting the box to sleep or some otyher setting that shuts it down.
All 64bit drivers have to signed. There should be 64bit signed drivers at the manufacturer site. You shouldn't even need the raid driver anyway.
Is something not working that you need the raid driver installed?
If the server is set to auto change to DST then the tasks will use the new time. The task will always run at the time set. There is no way that I know of to automate the process to have them run an hour earlier or later as the case may be. You'd have to manually set the time back or forward.
I would go with at least double the ram that you have now. With that many users logged in at one time the ram usage would go through the roof as you are seeing.
From the limited info I was able to find it looks like you can set these alerts using server manager in the security > network settings. strange place to put if you ask me.
You have to own the domain unless you sre using a local address such as localhost.localdomain. It would be best to let the server give out IP to the XP boxes that connect.
Site isn't big enough yet, but, if you post a little about yourself and your experience with Windows 2008 I'll keep it for when the time to add mods comes. Also help out with the questions that are asked here. If you show knowledge of Windows 2008 it will help speed up the promotion.
You can join the workgroup computers to the domain if you choose. I prefer doing it that way. Makes your file sharing a little more secure.
I have no experience running a domain controller in a VM so I can't offer any comments on that one.
