2. i just still dont understand NAT..i still dont get it.. SORRY haha im sure its simple im just getting confused
3. hi, ive changed my server over and put a new PC in and im experiancing some weird problems. Firstly, i cant install Web PI (Web Paltform Installer), it brings up a funny error and ive tried all troublshooting steps. Secondly, i think it may be something wrong with the os or something, as a new install i just tried to activate windows and i cant remember the exact error but if it comes up again ill screenshot it, it said something about failing to find correct DNS details and quit. Internet and everything is fine, however another thing is it seemed to come installed with heaps of security settings with IE that im slowly working on removing, i think i disabled Advanced Security for IE or something. Im despirately in need of installing Web PI and i need to get PHP, MySQL etc etc installed. This is my second install of server 2008 and the only this thats different is this is the 32bit version and none of these problems occured previously. Any help greatly appreciated! here the error message for Web PI Thanks!
4. haha im still lost man!
5. i would say this is DCHP related. i take it the server is assigning DHCP, check what the logs are for the DHCP role. also check the scope of the DHCP.
6. ok thanks, im not 100% sure i know this NAT stuff yet...somethings no registering this is the hardest thing ive come accross in IT yet... is it even hard lol its just like somethings missing THANKS!!!
7. right, thats basic. what has this got to do with "security" then. How is NAT a security measure? Thanks
8. ok like this? Thanks
9. i must be really dumb :( i still dont get it
10. thanks heaps for you help ill just begin with the top surely this is related to DHCP and/or assigning static ip, and gateways etc. take 192.168.1.5 and 192.168.0.24 and assign them both DNS of 192.168.1.1 (router) they would both use the same PUBLIC IP? Thanks
11. so im still having some pretty knarly RDP problems... whenever i restart my server, it takes AGES before i can RDP into it. a). it takes ages before it will even establish a connection B). when it finally connects it show black screen for ages. c). sometime i need to connect to VPN and connect to it locally, then disconnect from the VPN then it connects d). after about 10 minutes or trying like 30 times, it comes right (some how) any idea what this is, like it takes ages to load the RDP services? im not sure if this is avoidable, but its a real pain i spose server arnt ment to be restarted all the time too, but im still testing and configuring etc so i need to one more thing, i am running a game server, and ive got in the command line +ip 192.168.0.2 so it runs on the servers IP. because before it ran on 192.168.0.210 which was something different. But sometimes it starts up as LAN only? I understand if you cant help me Thanks
12. well nothing shows in the user tab on task manager...but im only logged in on RDP, and it never used to say this, it would just end my RDP session
13. ok, so i know im posting alot, but ive got alot going on haha yea nah sorry about that, but heres todays question Its about NAT, ive researched about NAT, and really TRIED to understand it, but just cant grasp it. I cant understand what NAT does. It appears it somehow changes the ip addresses? Maybe you could just write up and explaiin to me exactly how NAT works and what is does..i see theres many different types of NAT because at the moment, my server has windows firewall disabled and NO NAT, and i beleive it is something to do with security. (this probally explains my other post where i think someone else is logged onto my server haha!) Thanks!! you ROCK!
14. when i try to restart my server, its says are you sure you want to restart, there are other users logged on still.... ???? freaky lol
15. thanks, i got it connecting on startup fine with the shortcut in startup, but it doesnt connect intime before it says could not reconnect all network drives?? so i need it to connect to the VPN before it tries to reconnect network drives i dont spose theres a solution to this. Thanks
16. ok so ive done a bit of research on this but nothing really works i found that creating a batch file with cd C:\Windows\System32\ rasdial.exe MY VPN DOMAINNAME\USERNAME PASSWORD might work and schedulling its startup with windows scheduler. however, this is ratch unsafe storing my username and password in a BATCH file and also, when i run the batch file, it doesnt connect. So then i tried, add shortcut to startup folder, unticking boxes etc. but still doesnt connect on startup, is there another option for this What i am aiming for is the vpn to connect on logon then the network drives to connect on logon too. Thanks!!
17. i can too RDP via VPN using pptp vpn connection. just a heads up ;)
18. haha ok im sure your VPS provider can do this from there end...
19. you need to access your router configuration? do u know how to do that?? what kind of router have you got go to start, run (or in win7 vista etc its in the search box) type cmd then type ipconfig /all and find your default gateway for your active question now type that in your web browser.. ie.. http://192.168.0.1
20. port 25 is SMTP.. and i know some VPS services dont actually require port forwaring. just forward both ports to your server to start with...im not to familar with VPS but i can help you until it becomes an problem with the VPS config itself
21. you will need to port forward unless you have a DMZ setup.. have you setup port forwarding for both ports? and what protocol are the ports? TCP, UDP?
22. so i just RDPed into my server to restart it and it said there are currently other users online or whateva. Im the only one who has access to my server and i use the admin account? so is there someone else on my server, and how can i view a list of active users? thats pretty freaky Thanks!!
23. i beleive port forwariding is done in windows firewall, create a new incomming rule. i could never get it working though. and for me, setting up a static route didnt let me specify a port.
24. wheres the router role in server 2008?
25. have you port forwarded the ports? run a port check to see what state they are in www.ping.eu
