  1. Hello All, I have a question about trying to setup a client computer to connect from a home-based office. Here is our current setup; Main Server in the Office running Windows Server 2008 R2, it is configured as a Domain Controller and the client computer is connected to the domain while in the office. The network has a Netgear VPN in place. We have shared folders and databases on the server that need to be accessed from either on the road (hotel room) or from a home office. My question is what do I need to setup in order to have the client computer able to connect from a home office location? I have tried using Shrewsoft VPN Client software to establish a connection, am I on the right path or is there something on the server that I can setup to make it all work, I am completely new to this and appreciate any help I can get. I have looked into RealVNC but it doesn't appear to be what I am looking for. Any help?? Thanks!!
  2. Hello Koga, No the server is showing the proper IP address (192.168.x.x) but if I start up a client machine, it will give me limited connectivity or no connection and give me a random IP address such as (169.xxx.x.x) which is not in my scope and I am not sure where it is getting that IP from. I wasn't sure if still using a router is causing any issues?
  3. Hello All, I am new to working with a server and I have a quick question. I ordered a new server and it arrived and I installed the AD DS and DNS Server, as well as the DHCP role. My question is I can't seem to get the configuration right without getting the Red X showing that the DNS and DHCP roles are not working. My main question is we are using a Netgear Router that I have turned off the DHCP service and set a static IP on the server, but it still doesn't appear to work, can I use that router or should I just use a switch instead? Furthermore, when restart a client computer and try to connect it to the domain, it says that it can't find the domain controller, when I check the connection status the IP address is a random one that is not in the scope (for example if the scope is 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.200, the ip that shows up is something like a 169.xxx.x.x) I am not sure why it will not take an ip address that is in the scope? And I did set the Primary DNS Server up as the server's IP address so from what I have read, I am not sure where the problem lies. Any insight is greatly appreciated!!
  4. Good Afternoon All, I am looking to implement a server into the small business that I currently work for. I have a few questions on what I need to do and what will be the best way. Let me explain our infrastructure first; 8 Users (6 Desktops and 2 Laptops that will work remotely 2 Weeks/Month) (3 Users Windows 7, 5 Users XP) Currently use a tower running XP setup primarily for File Sharing All applications (ACT!, Microsoft Outlook, QuickBooks, etc.) are installed on each computer and only the company files are stored on the file sharing PC. It is a very poor setup and I have tried since being hired (6 months ago) to implement an actual server. I have received a quote from Dell on a Windows Server 2008 Tower Server with Raid 1. I am new to the server software. Ultimately we want to be able to logon from any network computer and access our personal desktop. I know that this can be done through using the Active Directory function. My question is, does that mean that all of the software needs to be installed on the server and not the personal computers. Because it currently is all installed on the personal computers. By implementing this I am hoping to use RealVNC to allow the 2 remote users to connect from outside the office. Can anyone help shed some light on the issues I have mentioned. I am also willing to make a call to anyone to save from having to write a book. Thanks!! Brent P.S. Sorry for the long Message.
