1. xenForo released a new HYS for xenForo v 2.4. The core of it is highlighting chunked uploads. What is chunked uploads you ask? It is an upload system that will split large file uploads into multiple parts which makes it possible to upload files larger than what the server would normally allow. Is it useful? Yes and no. If you allow users to upload large files and had to set your php.ini upload limit high to allow it then yes it's useful. If you don't it's of no use at all. To me this is something that is available in other software for awhile now. Once again the xenForo team underwhelmed. They rest on their laurels and do nothing to innovate. If anyone actually thinks this is an earth shattering feature then they must be stuck in the 1990's. As most of you know I am not and never have been a fan of xenForo. I used the software for a time because it was the best for what I needed. That is no longer the case as there are many other forum software packages that offer way more and are actively developed. Some are even free. So while I dislike xenForo I do watch it to see if they start to innovate. I fear innovation isn't in their vocabulary though. What's your thoughts on this?

3. Once you decide to start a community you have to decide which forum software to use. Choosing the best forum software depends on your specific needs, such as ease of use, customization, and community features. Here are some popular options: Discourse: Modern and user-friendly, with features like real-time discussions, mobile support, and extensive plugins. phpBB: A classic, open-source forum software that is highly customizable and has a large community. Vanilla Forums: Offers both open-source and paid versions, known for its clean interface and integration options. Flarum: A lightweight and modern forum software that is easy to set up and customize. Simple Machines Forum (SMF): A robust and flexible option with a strong community and a wide range of modifications. MyBB: Free and open-source, it provides a good balance of features and ease of use. NodeBB: Built on Node.js, it offers real-time discussions and a modern interface, suitable for tech-savvy users. XenForo: A premium option known for its powerful features and excellent support, ideal for larger communities. Consider your requirements regarding scalability, features, and budget when choosing the right software for your forum. My personal favorite is xenForo. I do like Discourse and in the future I will create a forum using it.
4. You have your server and software installed, Your community is ready. Now you need to style your forum. You could buy a premade style. They are great. Problem is other sites will have your look. What to do? Create you own style. Creating a style for XenForo involves a few steps. Here's a general guide to help you design and implement a custom skin for your XenForo forum: Step 1: Set Up Your Development Environment Install XenForo: Ensure you have a working installation of XenForo. Access Admin Control Panel: Log into the XenForo Admin Control Panel (ACP). Step 2: Create a New Style Navigate to Styles: Go to Appearance > Styles. Add a New Style: Click on Add style. Choose to create a style based on an existing one (e.g., the default style) to maintain basic functionality. Name your style (e.g., "My Custom Skin"). Step 3: Customize the Style Edit Style Properties: Click on your newly created style to edit it. Modify the style properties such as colors, fonts, and layout. Customize Templates: Go to Templates in the style editor. Edit templates to change the HTML structure. Use XenForo’s template syntax to ensure compatibility with the system. Modify CSS: Go to Styles > Style Properties > General to adjust CSS. You can also add custom CSS under Styles > Templates > Extra.less for more specific changes. Step 4: Add Custom Graphics Create Graphics: Design any custom graphics or icons you want to use. Upload Graphics: Go to Appearance > Templates > Style Properties > Images. Upload your custom images and set paths accordingly. Step 5: Preview and Test Preview Changes: Use the preview function to see how your changes look. Check Responsiveness: Ensure your skin looks good on different devices (desktop, tablet, mobile). Step 6: Finalize and Apply Set as Default: Once satisfied, you can set your new style as the default for your forum. User Group Permissions: Adjust permissions for user groups to access the new style if needed. Step 7: Document Your Changes Keep a record of the changes made for future reference or updates. Example CSS Snippet Here’s a simple example of a CSS snippet you might include in your custom skin: body { background-color: #f0f0f0; /* Light grey background */ font-family: 'Arial', sans-serif; /* Change font */ } a { color: #007bff; /* Link color */ } .header { background-color: #333; /* Dark header */ color: #fff; /* White text in header */ } .footer { background-color: #222; /* Dark footer */ color: #ccc; /* Light grey text in footer */ } Step 8: Backup Your Work Regularly backup your custom skin and any changes you make. By following these steps, you can create a custom skin for your XenForo forum that reflects your unique style. Questions? Post them and we will help you.
5. Now that Invision Community has been installed here for a few weeks what are your thoughts? I like it because I get a choice of viewing the topics first or the linear old forum list style. I like the permission system. I always did. The inheritance of xenforo never made sense to be. I like the admin cp the best. There are other things too. IPB used to be the software I used. I converted my sites to IPB during the vBulletin drama after it was sold. I liked everything about IPB. Rapid development, devs and staff communicating about new products and versions. I would have never left if it hadn't been because of a misunderstanding I had one of the staff members. I was told they couldn't help with a small problem I had because I run my sites on Windows Servers with IIS. I converted my sites to xenforo. Strange that now I am coming full circle. back to where I started after the vbulletin disaster.
6. As you can see things have changed in the last few hours. I installed Invision Community on a test site. I wanted to run the importers again, I did it on the test site with a million post forums, to see if the process could be sped up. I decided to use the Forum² data as the test. Everything went smooth. I then wanted to try my hand with the styles. It turned out to be easier than xenForo using the visual editor. Once I had everything set up I checked in here to see we had no new posts since I did the import. I decided to go ahead and make the switch. I had pretty much decided to do the conversion to Invision Community when I got to play with the test site. I didn't expect to do it this fast. In any case some things are different. Your login will work. You have to use your email address or username and your current password to login. In the future the option to use a username to login may be removed. Logging in with email is more secure. If you find any bugs let me know by posting in https://www.forum-forum.com/forum/29-suggestions-bugs-feedback/ This move makes us unique. We are the only admin forum that isn't using xenForo.
7. All the latest news and info from the xenForo RSS feeds will be posted in this thread.
8. Yea I know it just got back. Can't be helped. I will be updating the xenforo from 1.5.14 to 2.3.3. Backups will be made first. When I start the backup I'll close the site. If everything goes well It should only be done a couple hours. See you all on the other side.

14. Today we are releasing XenForo 2.3.0 Release Candidate 5. While the majority of this release is focusing on bug fixes and stability, there are a few noteworthy changes. Automatic legacy file clean up XenForo installations after upgrading to XenForo 2.3 will have a number of files sitting in the file system which are no longer used. Any XenForo installation that has been around for a while, will to a lesser extent, have a similar issue. These files on their own shouldn't present any... Read more Continue reading...
15. This week in addition to a bunch of bug fixes, we've also been doing a spot of housekeeping in our code. The following is quite technically heavy so if you're a non-developer, shield your eyes and read the less boring bits. Much wider usage for class strings As a reminder, XenForo 2.3 brings with it support for using native PHP class strings. For example, originally we used "class short names" to point to certain classes. While these were easy to write, it makes refactoring classes... Read more Continue reading...

18. As we get ever closer to the fabled "release candidate" stage and the eventual stable release, today we are releasing the eighth beta for XenForo 2.3! Nothing particularly noteworthy this week other than a number of bug fixes. We strongly recommend anyone testing 2.3 during this beta period upgrade as each beta version is released. More specific details regarding bugs fixed in this release can be found in the resolved bugs forum. This is beta software. It is not... Read more Continue reading...
19. Unfortunately it has recently come to our attention that the CAPTCHA previously provided by Solve Media is no longer functional. Initially it seemed like it was just their verification endpoint that was no longer functional, but it now transpires that their CAPTCHA challenges are no longer displaying either. If your site is currently configured to use Solve Media, it is highly likely that new users are currently unable to register an account on your forum. Even if that aspect starts... 20. Welcome to 2.3.0 Beta 7! Since our last release we have been mostly focusing again on bug fixes and stability, though we do have an interesting change to note related to multibyte strings, specifically URL romanization. If available, we now use the intl extension and perform a multi-layered process for normalizing and transliterating strings. This is now much more intelligent as it handles some special cases for certain locales (based on the default language of the forum). We also... Read more Continue reading...
21. This week (and a bit) we have been extremely busy working towards that enticing milestone of a stable release. There's still a little while to go with a healthy number of bugs, feedback and other bits in our backlog that we'd like to work through, but each release represents a significant amount of effort and progress towards the end goal. While we have mostly focused on bug fixes and other stability improvements, this has resulted in some notable changes which you should be aware of... Read more Continue reading...
22. Finally, the add-ons have some love While there is the usual amount of bug fixes as we work hard to make XenForo 2.3 even more stable, this Beta in particular brings a number of new features to our official add-ons. You can read our recent 'Have you seen...?' thread to find out what's new: XenForo Enhanced Search XenForo Resource Manager XenForo Media Gallery Note in particular, XenForo Enhanced Search has slightly higher minimum requirements than we...
