We have a Windows Server 2008 standard 64-bit running SQL 2005 Standar 64-bit with a Xeon processor, 8GB mem, 2x RAID mirror set and another extra HDD for backups.

This server runs IIS 7 and is a fairly high traffic website.

Currently the server would sometimes just reboot unexpectedly; otherwise it runs like a dream without any issues.

Question: How would I go about troubleshooting this, as I am not sure what kind of monitoring I need to setup to trace the cause of these reboots. Any help would be appreciated

Check event viewer. It should give you an idea about what is happening. It could be the power to the server is interupted or could be a program causing the problem.

That's where I started, but doesn't give me any indication of the problem. I was hoping to get some advanced advice on how to configure monitoring or which event log to check for the problem (where to start basically).

Every time the server reboots it just prompts for reason for unexpected shutdown and thats it.

Hello

I've got similar problem with my win2008. I found that other user also met this problem:

http://serverforum.org/f8/windows-server-2008-freezing-like-its-381.html

After some time server hung up and there is no other way to run it again only reset. There is no clear information in logs what was happened: unexpected shutdown only.

I found that network almost work(ping responses), but network shares are unaccessible although they're visible. When I try to log in I got: username or pasword incorrect but I know they were good. When I try to switch other user it freeze totally.

My config is : win 2008 std 32bit sp2, Intel XEON, 4 GB RAM, adaptec raid 5405 controller for array, and IBM DB2 server 8.2. Drivers are updated to latest versions.

i did check the server both in normal and safe mode with almost all versions of antivirus but could not find any viruses or worms or trojans,... current antivirus installed on the server is ESET NOD32 Version 4.2.64.12 . i also uninstalled eset from server but restart got continue. i scanned for registry fixes but this also does not work. i also checked the mentioned files in below the report and could only find "appcompat.txt" do required changes but nothing positive happend.

Hi, do you have any minidump? They're located in C:\win\minidump\

Anyway, I really hope your problem is not SERVICES.EXE because it means you should reinstall windows server...
