heydo6 Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 i was thinking of setting up my own web site (small) but instead of paying a server fee every month i thought i would set my own up . i have plenty of extra speed and i had an extra computer hanging around , 2.2 dual ,4gb ram , raid 1 . Well i have the windows server 2008 R2 installed and every thing there is working perfect . the problem is i don't know where to go from there ? I figured setting up some remote software would be first but i don't know what i need ? I was also wondering what kinda Virus software to use with a server ? i have free Norton with comast cable but i wasn't sure if that's what i should use ? the newer norton is very nice these days , i was thinking i could just set it up as public instead of home ? not sure . If any one has a list of software that i should have or some links to a good guide ? i am reading alot on the subject but it's all so new , it's like a different language . i am sure with enough time i will figure it out ,trial & error but some advice on the subject would be very helpful ... thanks so much everyone ... my first post also hope to learn alot here ... mmthomas Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 If you want to be legal, using Windows Server for your web platform means that you need to have client access licenses for each person you expect to connect to your web site. If that is more than a handful, you may need to consider a per-processor CAL which allows unlimited connections. A good place to visit is The Official IIS site. There is a lot of information on IIS around the internet, but a lot of it is compartmentalized, meaning there will be sites for FrontPage that only talk about FrontPage and nothing else. Sites for ASP that mention nothing else. There is just a lot of information out there and it is difficult to give advice when there isn't much to go on. Hopefully the link above will give you some starting info. Quote
