Hey all. I have a problem which I been working on for over 4 days in which I have had no luck in getting it work.

Setup

Cisco RV016 Small Business Router with DHCP Relay turned on pointing to the server static IP of 10.7.14.198/28. (One of three NICs, but only 198 is binded to DHCP Server). The gateway/router itself sits at IP 10.7.14.193/28 as well.

The 4 DHCP Scopes are:

  • 10.7.14.0/25 - User ClassID "Members"
  • 10.7.14.128/ - No ClassID/VenderID
  • 10.7.14.160/ - Mixed VenderClassID and User ClassID
  • 10.7.14.216/28 - User ClassID "HQ"

DHCP is bound to only IPv4 10.7.14.198. Also as far as I can tell, DHCP in/out is open on Windows Firewall. I have even tried disabling Windows Firewall.

My first gut thought is that the router is not forwarding DHCP requests to the server because if I put on a packet sniffer I don't see anything and also under the Statistics, only thing ever increasing is the DHCP discover. Any help would be greatfull. :-)

Hi there,

DHCP requests are made with broadcast packets, this works ONLY behind a router, once a router receive a broadcast packet, it simply drops it.

To be able to forward request through a router, you have to setup a DHCP relay server.

I hope this help.
