Upgrade 2K3 To 2K8

trying to upgrde server 2k3 to 2k8 keep getting error 0xc0000005 during the last step (completing upgrade) of the installation process. tried disabling all antispyware and quit all programs before starting installation without success. have brand new memory sticks which have been checked. tried also installing from another hard disk instead of the dvd drive also without success. shat else??? thanks.

Although for me the best thing to do is a clean install, I just heard a similar problem time ago which has been fixed with this hotfix:

If this doesn't help, I suggest you to remount the old ram (at least, remove the new one) and try the upgrade. From what I can remember, error 0x05 is a memory corruption, BUT I AM NOT SURE!

The ram seems to be all fine. i tested it overnight with memtest and it came out clean no errors in 9 passes. the hotfix suggested is from 2007. i would think that it has already been included in the updates since then. or not??

I never said that your ram's faulty. I just *think* that an upgrade is harder than a clean install, so, maybe if something changes, your upgrade will not work properly.

 

I just suggest you to remove the new ram, try the upgrade and AFTER, "update" your ram again.

Although the error sounds like an hw issue to me... Check this article (I think you already read it before the upgrade...) and check you're eligible to upgrade the system:

tried also increasing the free space in the partition where windows is installed and gave it a total of 84.9 Gb with 36.4 Gb free space. the installation still stops at the same point as before (completing installation). this is, i think, an indication that the problem is not due to a random memory problem as the crash is not random.

1) HW specs

2) Actual Server 2k3 version (r1, r2, standard, enterprise, ...)

3) version you want to install (standard, datacenter, ...)

0xc0000005 is the only code that microsoft cares to give in this case. i do not think it is a random occurrence as it happens every time precisely at the same stage, the final stage, of the upgrade from 2k3 to 2k8 (completing upgrade).

it is some access violation or denial, but where? i have tried everything i've found online: updating from a hd instead of cd, exchanging memory from another computer, changing from ahci to sata in bios, to no avail.

I know it happens at a precise moment, but 0x5 can be compared to "generic error occurred" which means everything and nothing at the same time.

 

Sorry I have no more ideas
