Hello,

I have heard a lot about windows server, and finally decided to learn something about it. I just installed windows server 200 R2 , but now so many questions are wandering in my mind, and hopefully i can get some answers through this post.

If i may say, windows server is a server operating system that is used to control, allocate network resources ?

I have a good understanding in Networking technology , but i am new to this part of Networking. so here are my questions :

1) Do you need more than one computer in order to use windows server ?

2) Does the computer need to be connected in some sort of networking device such as switch or a router ?

Thank you.

hi there.

Yes this is a server OS. The main use is to centralize resources (files, policy, computer) and to do so, usually you install Active Directory. It's quite mandatory that you have clients which can connect to the server, otherwise they must sit in front to the server in order to work.

You have 2 choices to connect users:

Add workstation to the domain so the power to calculate things(running programs) is taken from the PC itself, or you can use terminal server, and in this scenario yours clients can have only a keyboard, mouse, screen and a network card. Which are called THIN CLIENT. In this way clients are on the server and they use its resources!

Usually you connect clients and server via a switch.
