Erratic Login Issues For Users

Guys,

 

I am getting a little confused with this (been on it for around 4 days now!).

 

The environment is Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation on a Workgroup with 3 Printers connected via USB to the server. All users connect wirelessly and DHCP is handled by the Wireless Router. Firstly the reason for using a workgroup is because all staff laptops are running Windows 7 Home Premium which will not connect to a domain. Also the staff connect to customer networks when visiting them and therefore this avoids any 'incidents' whilst they are out of the office.

 

The problem I am having is that a user will connect to the wireless network to find the shared printers greyed out, despite having a connection to the mapped drive on the server and also connect to the server via RDS. I have found that to get around this, if the user opens their 'library' and hits the 'Network' label on the bottom left of the screen, they are asked to enter username and password. Once this has been done, the printers are available for use.

 

Given the choice I would use a Domain and Active Directories as I believe this would recognise users instantly and apply their preferences etc. but I cannot so is there a way to automatically log users on to the server (network) in a workgroup and therefore give printer availability without the hassle above please?

If you don't have a domain, I think your last solution is to grant the PRINT control to everyone (NOT FULL CONTROL!) and take a look here:

Anyway if SHARED printer are grayed out you should check sharing permissions.

 

Although this could be a little bug which should be resolved with SP1 (Win 7)
