nelf Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Hi, I just got myself a VPS server 2008 RC2. I have added a domain role to the server. Then I have a Windows XP laptop at home. I am trying to connect this laptop to the domain. At this point I am using Wifi connection, so I know, that I won't be able to log in to domain after computer restart. I can ping the server from my laptop. Also I have changed the DNS configuration, so the server's ip is first on my list. Also I have created an account in Domain controller for my laptop) But I can't add laptop to the servers domain. It is giving me error: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." (error code 0x0000007B ERROR_INVALID_NAME) What am I missing? So.. I was thinking that reasons that this is not working could be... connection over wifi putting in the servers ip address instead of the name different IP addressed (server has a static ip address and laptop is behind router firewall in my home) I have been struggling with this for days now... Please help Thank you, Adam. Quote
ICTCity Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 What's your domain name? It looks like there's something wrong with it. Can you add other servers or workstations? Wait, I'm not sure about what you're trying to do... To join a domain (My Computer > right click > properties), you must be on the right network. What I mean is that you cannot join you INTERNAL domain from outside, and you CANNOT join EXTERNAL domain as inside. In other words, when you're at home, you cannot type the domain name sir.nelf.im and hope that you pc will join that domain. Let me know, maybe I'm wrong. I see your point and it makes sense. It was logical to me that if: - My server has an external IP address and I could ping it from my laptop - dns settings on laptop were pointing my server then I would be able to connect to the domain using ip address (instead of domain name). If I get this right first I need to make a link between my laptop and a server, so they are both on same internal network? How about setting a VPN connection? Would that work out for me? Or do you maybe have any other ideas. Once again thank you very much for your help, Adam. Quote

To be honest I never tried something like that before, BUT let's write my thoughts: The most important thing is that you need to reach the FQDN of your DC. Which is blocked not only by the firewall, but also by the DNS itself. If you want to resolve this issue, you MUST change some settings which will expose your network to a giant security hole, for example zone transfer. Now, the VPN. Teorically you should be able to accomplish this without problems, but as said before, I'm not sure... I found this article which refers to ISA server, but the informations may be useful: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303503/en-us Let me know.
