I installed a new 2008R2 64 bit server and moved a couple hundred Gig of data from my old 2003 32 bit server to it and shared it out and set permissions as they were on the old server.

Users try to access their data only to be denied access at different levels in the sub folder structure.

When I go to the folder and reset the permissions it acts like it is working but will just sit there with the status bar going across the screen forever and I am unable to even cancel it and have to log off the server in order to stop it.

Even as the administrator I cannot change it nor can I even copy or delete the folders or files it will just hang.

Has anyone seen this and know what is going on and how to fix it?

I have hundreds of folders, as of right now I only have two that have this problem that I know of but I know more will pop up.

Thanks.

Check the owner, Change it to admin or any domain admin account. Retry to set permissions.

That was the first thing I tried, would not be much of an IT guy if I skipped that step. lol

Good luck on the job search.

try to copy using robocopy instead of copy/paste.

when users are unable to access a folder, what are the permission on that folder? Are permissions inherited?

Just to be precise, my previous post was obvious because most of the problems can be resolved with "basic" tasks. I never said you are not a good IT guy.

It was meant in a light hearted way no offence was taken.

I have been doing IT for about 25 years now but maybe I should have been more clear on what I have tried so far, just did not want to be too long winded on it and was hoping someone had seen this problem since I have tried all the simple fixes. At the file level Administrator and Domain Admins have full rights and ownership to the folders and files, users have modify but even as the administrator I cannot copy move or delete the files it just has the status bar going for ever and I have to log off to get out of it. I have tried retaking ownership with the accounts already listed and also selecting from adding a new group from the domain and it will finish like it worked but still have the same problem. Before I moved the folder from the old server I took ownership and applied the new permissions to all subdirectories and checked to make sure it worked and it did but once copied to the new server the sub folders would have the administrator listed but with no rights checked. I am able to check the full rights and for most folders it works it is just some of them that it does not work and those folders I am unable to move copy or delete, have even tried to recopy the problem folder from the original location but get denied access when I try to copy to the same place on the new server.

Try the following:

Locate a folder that actually has a problem with permission (access denied or cannot copy). Write down the location.

Now, from your server (new), use robocopy to copy ONLY that folder from the old server to the new one, but on a different location, not on the same directory you copied before. In other words, if you have C:\FolderCopied\FolderWithProblem, copy from the old server to C:\MyNewFolder\

Of course, set robocopy to copy permissions too.

Let me know if, after this try, you are able to access / move / copy this folder. I'm trying to understand if the problem with permissions (the progress bar) is related only to that folder or not.

I was able to use Robocopy to copy over the folder with the problems and it reset the permissions and fixed the problem on the first folder, hope it works on the rest.

Thanks for the information on Robocopy never used it before, nice tool.
