rafacoelho Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Hi everybody, I'm new to the forum and new to Windows Server 2008 as well. A friend of mine called me to help him with a new workstation for his office. I've built it and hooked it up to his workgroup network. He has 6 more workstations running Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro. One Server 2008 with one role installed: File Services. Upon connecting his new workstation I've tried connecting to the shares on the server but got the "\\SERVER is not available. You do not have permission...." message. The new workstation can connect to all other workstations and read/write to their shares. Had my laptop with me so I joined the workgroup and tried connecting to the server's share, no luck. Were able to connect to all other workstation's shares just fine. Is there anything on the server that could be blocking new connections? Do I have to add the new user/workstation to the server? If yes, how? Appreciate any help! Best regards! Quote

Let me know. 1 Quote -------------------------------------------------------- Tu peux aussi crire en franais. Du kannst auch auf Deutsch schreiben. rafacoelho Posted June 5, 2011 Author Posted June 5, 2011 Thanks for the reply! Security tab > Group or user names: Everyone - full control SYSTEM - Full control BATCH - Full control Administrators (SERVER2008\Administrators) - Full control INTERACTIVE - Full control SERVICE - Full control It doesn't show any of the other users on the workgroup and they all access the share. ICTCity Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 that's OK because of EVERYONE is allowed. Now the point is: if you click on the share tab, then on authorization or permission, can you find everyone too? When others PC can connect to the server, do they use this form to access the resource? \\IP\share ? Just to be sure, in your workgroup there aren't more than 10 pcs, right? rafacoelho Posted June 5, 2011 Author Posted June 5, 2011 I have 7 PCs on the workgroup. All other workstations, when browsing computers on the network can double click the Server and open the shares. Under permissions 'Everyone' is allowed full control. From the new workstation I can connect to the share by mapping the network drive \\SEVER2008\share with the Server's Admin credentials, but for some reason at some point it looses the connection and tells me that I don't have permission anymore. ICTCity Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 When you map the network drive do you check the box "reconnect at logon"? If you restart the PC, nothing mapped, what is the output of "net use"? rafacoelho Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 Yes, I do check the 'reconnect at logon' box. I restart the PC and it's there. I leave and in a couple of days they call me saying that they cannot connect. When I get back in there I'll check for the net use output. Quote
ICTCity Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Ok, BE SURE to DISCONNECT ALL THE NETWORK DRIVES before restarting and use "net use". I want to understand if there are any connection existent to the server, even if you have everything detached.
