I built a new Dell server running 64 bit Windows 2008 R2 server OS on it and I am having problems with my XP workstations. The work stations do not always map the drive connecting to the 2008 shared folder, when it does map the drive the users can access the data but at intermittent times the server drive will disappear on them and not be accessible. When this has happened they are unable to do a run to the server by name or IP, if I reboot the server access is restored but this happens to often to be rebooting the server all the time. Windows7 PCs do not have the same problem and always have access to the shared folders on this server so it is just the XP workstations. One other strange thing is that if I try to access the server to many times from an XP workstation when it is not accessible the server will also stop responding to the Windows7 PC and then I have no choice but to reboot the server. I have turned off the Windows firewall and that does not seem to have an effect, it is on right now and I am able to access the server but also just did a reboot of the server after it stopped responding to the Windows7 PCs as well from me trying to many times to access it from XP.

Hi,

Are you running your network on a domain? If yes, what is the functionality level?

If not, do you have more then 10 pc / server on your workgroup?

Before having this problem, did you have a Win 2k3 server?
