Join Domain From A Remote Location

We have two locations in our company and two different networks which are connected together.

 

I am on 192.168.1.1 and Windows 2008 server is on 192.168.2.1 - I can see everything on .2.1, I can ping it etc..

 

I would like to know if it is possible to join a domain on .2.1 - where Windows 2008 server is from my location .1.1.

 

I always get this message:

The domain name "domainname" might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.domainname

 

Common causes of this error include the following:

 

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:

 

84.255.210.79

84.255.209.79

 

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

 

domainname

. (the root zone)

 

I have around 15 desktop computers that I have to join with domain and domain server is a few kilometers away. Any help would be much appreciated.

Of course you can... but not with that settings!

 

As the message says:

This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:

 

84.255.210.79

84.255.209.79

 

Actually both IP are yours EXTERNALS DNS which don't know ANYTHING about the other domain.

 

Set the clients DNS servers with IPs of your DNS (internal - DC), you will notice that you can join your domain now :)

Ok, so let's say the IP of DC is 192.168.2.30 - do I put that as DNS for my client computers?

well usually yes... but everything depends on if your DC is a DNS server too... but usually yes.
