Hi,

I have 2 servers, both are domain controllers and Active Directory Domain controllers. I have transferred all the FSMO roles to the "new" server and to my knowledge the "old" server now does very little. However, when switching the "old" server off all the clients become incredibly slow pretty much unusable. The "new" server is the DNS, DHCP and GC server as well as the operations master for everything, however the "old" server still seems to have some link with the Active Directory.

What can I do to break this dependancy?

Cheers.

Have you uninstalled AD on the old server? If not uninstall. Also make sure there are no sites still connecting to the old server or no site objects.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I haven't uninstalled it yet as when I do it says no other AD DC's can be found on the domain, whereas various MMC windows on the machine(s) suggest otherwise, that both old and new servers are AD DC's. Is this normal? We had an interesting situation this morning where our old server crashed over night, and whilst logging in to the domain and internet access was achievable some applications connected explicitly to the new server were inaccessible before powering up the old server.

Also checking the AD status in the MMC window on the new server whilst the old was off resulted in a "cannot find the domain" error, despite both being DC's? It's odd as the white server seems to still be "god" despite not being the operations master etc for anything! Where should I be looking especially to ensure there is no sites etc connecting to the old server?

Cheers.
