Years back when I was starting out with SEO I learned the cloaking technique. You use an anchor text link to your competitors main keyqword and link it to your site. You hide it with CSS. At the time it worked well.

I have used Private Blog Network, and it really worked. However, my blogs on the private Blog Network were also had a lot of quality content.
